Living with roommates can be a gamble, and sometimes the stakes are higher than you’d like. Take the case of a guy we’ll call Mike, who shares an apartment with two other guys: Jake and Sam. Their living situation was fairly standard—dishes piled up, occasional arguments about cleaning duties, and the general chaos of sharing a space with other people. But then came Mike’s peculiar new routine that turned their bathroom visits into a daily spectacle.

It all started a month ago. Mike, in an effort to assert dominance in the shared bathroom, decided to take matters into his own hands—literally. After his old toilet seat cracked, he replaced it with a brand-new one, claiming it as his personal property. Now, you may think that’s perfectly reasonable; after all, who doesn’t want a good toilet seat? But there was a twist—every single night, without fail, Mike would unscrew the entire seat and take it to his bedroom.
Jake and Sam were baffled. At first, they thought it was just a one-off thing—maybe Mike was worried about it getting damaged in the middle of the night. It was certainly a strange move, but they figured he’d settle down once he got used to the new seat. Nope! The nightly ritual continued, and it became increasingly absurd. Every morning, like clockwork, Mike would reattach it before heading off to work, treating it as if he was completing an important morning task rather than just readying a crucial part of a shared bathroom.
When Jake confronted Mike about it, he found himself in a bizarre debate over respect and ownership. According to Mike, the toilet seat was his, and he argued that Jake and Sam were the real problem. “You guys sit on it too hard!” he would exclaim, insisting their behavior was damaging the hinges. They tried reasoning with him. “Why don’t we just split the cost of a new one?” Jake suggested, only for Mike to dismiss it outright. For him, it wasn’t about the money—it was about respect. “You need to learn to take care of other people’s stuff,” he insisted.
The frustration was palpable. The bathroom is a shared space, and their living arrangement wasn’t strictly about ownership—it was about compromise too. But Mike refused to budge. Sam, always the more laid-back of the trio, suggested that they simply ignore Mike’s antics, arguing that giving any reaction was only feeding into his need for attention. But Jake wasn’t convinced. He needed to use the bathroom, and the whole situation felt ridiculous. “What am I supposed to do? Knock on his door and ask to use my own toilet?”
It didn’t help that Mike had an odd sense of self-righteousness about the whole matter. One night, Jake found himself in dire need of the bathroom after a long day at work. With no other option, he knocked on Mike’s bedroom door and, without saying a word, Mike opened the door, handed over the toilet seat like a ceremonial offering, and returned to his room. “Thanks?” Jake mumbled, feeling like he was participating in some kind of surreal toilet seat exchange program.
The absurdity escalated daily. Some mornings, Jake would wake up to find the toilet seat mysteriously missing from its usual spot. He would text Mike, asking if he was planning to return it to the bathroom any time soon. “Respect for property” was Mike’s constant refrain. He even started leaving passive-aggressive notes on the bathroom mirror about taking better care of “shared items.”
Meanwhile, their bathroom had become a battlefield for the strangest war over a clearly unnecessary system of ownership. Sam tried to mediate but found himself getting sucked into the madness. “Dude, it’s just a toilet seat!” he said one day, exasperated. However, it was clear that Mike had an emotional attachment to his new throne. His arguments morphed into a bizarre crusade for bathroom etiquette.
As the days turned into weeks, Jake and Sam began to adapt. They learned to plan their bathroom visits around Mike’s schedule, giving him the space he seemed to crave. They navigated their apartment with an air of wariness that made them chuckle and shake their heads. Sure, it was inconvenient, but at least they had a story to tell at parties.
Mike was undeterred in his quest for respect, and Jake and Sam were just along for the ride. Living with roommates can lead to unexpected situations, and this was undoubtedly one for the books—a battle over a toilet seat that had spiraled into a bizarre story they would someday recount to their friends with laughter and disbelief.
