There’s a saying that you can’t choose your family, but what about your friends? Or your roommates, for that matter? For one flight attendant, the answer was painfully clear: not all roommates are created equal. Living in a crashpad with fellow cabin crew members, she expected a certain level of hygiene and cooperation. Unfortunately, her new bunkmate was anything but tidy.

In her Reddit post, she explained that she had been living in this shared space for roughly three years without any major hygiene issues. But that changed when a new roommate arrived. This new addition to their two-bedroom crashpad quickly became notorious for her unhygienic habits, loud phone conversations, and an overall lack of respect for communal living.

“She’s always on the phone—loudly—on speaker,” the flight attendant wrote. “It’s like she doesn’t realize that we’re all trying to sleep during the day.” This was not an isolated incident; complaints about her behavior seemed to echo through the halls of their crashpad. But despite the grumbling, no one actually decided to confront her. The flight attendant felt like she was living in a sitcom where everyone complains about the ridiculous roommate but does nothing to change the situation.

She described her bunkmate’s living habits as a perfect storm of disrespect: cooking without cleaning, blasting the TV, and, her personal pet peeve, singing loudly from her top bunk. “The bedrooms have quiet hours, but she just doesn’t get it,” she added, visibly frustrated. “There’s an unspoken rule here, and it seems like she’s the only one who doesn’t understand it.”

But the flight attendant’s frustrations were just beginning. Sharing a bunk bed with this “totally unhygienic nightmare” proved to be a gross experience. “She sleeps on the top bunk, and I’m on the bottom. The first time her used tissue fell onto my pillows, I couldn’t believe it.” She had politely asked her bunkmate to use a bag for her tissues, but her request went unanswered. “No apology, no accountability,” she noted, recounting how that behavior became a repeating nightmare.

The situation escalated when a used tooth flosser—yes, you read that right—dropped onto her pillow one day. “I was ready to lose it. I told her enough was enough,” she said. Compounding her revulsion, she found stray eyelashes from the bunkmate’s extensions littering her bed. It was as if a horror film was playing out in real life, and she was stuck sharing the frame with the villain. “I don’t understand how someone can be this inconsiderate,” she lamented.

Desperate for change, she reached out to the man who managed the crashpad. “I told him that she needed to be dealt with or I was leaving,” she explained. He promised to talk to her, but when that failed to produce results, her disillusionment grew. “She’s sick again, and I swear, there are dried boogers on my nightstand,” she exclaimed, the disgust evident in her tone. “I nearly threw up. Every time I clean it, it somehow comes back.”

Feeling completely unheard and invisible, she decided to take matters into her own hands. “I told the property manager that nothing had changed, and that I was leaving as soon as I found another place,” she wrote. His response? “That’s really sad to hear, but you have to do what’s best for you.” What about the people putting up with this nightmare? No one seemed willing to stand up and address the problem, leaving her feeling isolated and gaslit.

As she recounted her ordeal, she reflected on how this new roommate had disturbed the balance of their home. “I’ve had issues with people before, but they’ve never been this vile,” she admitted. “I thought I could connect with the others here, but they all act fake.” While the flight attendant had expected camaraderie and support, she instead found herself navigating a situation that felt increasingly untenable.

The entire experience illustrated the challenges of shared living—especially when it involved a roommate who seemed to disregard not just cleanliness, but also communal respect. As she looked for a new spot, she couldn’t help but wonder how it had all become so unbearable in such a short time.
