A silhouette of a man stares out a bedroom window with closed blinds, emphasizing introspection.

When Jamie moved into his college hostel, he anticipated the typical experience: late-night study sessions, occasional parties, and the chance to make new friends. What he didn’t expect was to be bombarded by the chaos of immature roommates who seemed to have no concept of boundaries or common courtesy.

From the moment he arrived, Jamie knew he was in trouble. The first night, he tried to settle in and get a good night’s sleep by 11:00 PM after a long shift at his dad’s store. But as the clock struck midnight, the sounds of gunfire erupted from the tiny room shared with his new roommates. They were deep into a mobile game called Free Fire, and the loud booms echoed through the walls like a concert. Jamie’s head was pounding, and he decided the best course of action was to politely ask them to keep it down.

“Hey, guys, could you maybe turn it down a bit? I have class early tomorrow,” Jamie ventured, hoping his request would be met with understanding.

Instead, one of his roommates, Alex, took it as a personal attack. “What are you, the noise police? I’m just trying to enjoy my game!” he shot back with a dramatic flair, quickly escalating the situation. He cranked up the volume, blasting the game’s sound effects even louder as he mocked Jamie’s plea. “You just can’t handle fun!” he continued, completely missing the point of Jamie’s request.

But the noise wasn’t Jamie’s only issue. The emotional drama unfolding within the room was a spectacle of its own. It seemed that every night, at least one of his roommates would dive into a meltdown over some relationship drama, sobbing into their phones with comments echoing in the small space. It felt like a mix between a reality show and a bad sitcom, with Jamie stuck as the unwilling audience member.

To add insult to injury, Alex, the self-proclaimed victim, ended up sharing a class with Jamie. Sitting right next to him, Alex’s antics continued. He would yell and swear during phone calls, disregarding the professor’s attempts to maintain order. Jamie couldn’t believe it—his classmates shot him sympathetic glances, while professors looked increasingly frustrated. “You’re not targeting me, right?” Alex would say with a twisted smile, as if he knew he was testing the limits of everyone’s patience.

As if the noise and classroom interruptions weren’t enough, Jamie was also facing the maddening situation of his roommates’ lack of hygiene. The shared room looked less like a student accommodation and more like a college garbage dump. Clothes were strewn everywhere, and biscuit wrappers and candy packages littered the floor. Jamie did his best to keep his area tidy, but he was constantly fighting a losing battle.

Worst of all was the foot situation. Without fail, Jamie would come back from a long day of classes or work to find his roommates lounging on his bed with their dirty feet unceremoniously perched on his blankets. “Dude, can you not?” Jamie would say, pointing at the grime now marking his bedding. But they’d laugh it off, calling him uptight and insisting, “We’re just chilling.” The effort it took for Jamie to clean his bed every single night was exhausting, and he often found himself too stressed to even think about studying or getting a proper rest.

He felt like he was losing his mind. Between the nonstop noise, emotional outbursts, and complete disregard for shared living conditions, Jamie was at his wit’s end. The constant sleep deprivation began to weigh heavily on him. He would sit in lectures, fighting to stay awake, while his roommates’ antics played out like a real-life comedy show.

Even social interactions became painfully awkward. One of his roommates, Mark, would occasionally invite Jamie out for a “great time,” only to find they were taking cringe-worthy Instagram photos of themselves smoking cigarettes. It felt like a total disregard for Jamie’s interests and aspirations.

On a night when the chaos seemed particularly unbearable, Jamie found himself posting on Reddit at 2:00 AM, overtaken by frustration and desperately seeking advice from anyone who had survived a similar college nightmare. His story was a collage of noise, drama, and messy living—an experience he hoped would resonate with others who had faced the daunting challenge of sharing a space with people who simply didn’t get it.
