Once upon a time in a high school not too different from many others, a student named Alex found himself navigating the often-turbulent waters of teenage life. For Alex, however, these waters came with an additional challenge: he suffered from frequent and severe nosebleeds due to his high blood pressure. This wasn’t just the occasional dribble of blood; these were nosebleeds that left a noticeable mark on his desk and required him to leave class more often than he’d prefer. Thankfully, most of his teachers had accommodated this peculiar situation, allowing him to excuse himself at will. However, there was one teacher who was particularly strict about classroom interruptions.

This teacher, Mrs. Thompson, had a reputation for being somewhat unmoving in her methods. Her lectures were her domain, and woe betide anyone who attempted to disrupt them. On a particular Wednesday, Alex sat in his usual spot, taking diligent notes while Mrs. Thompson went over a complex topic. As she passionately lectured, Alex suddenly felt that familiar tingling sensation in his nose, a warning sign he had learned to recognize all too well. He quickly pinched his nose, trying to stem the impending flow of blood, but it came out with a vengeance.

Realizing he was in trouble, Alex calmly raised his hand, hoping to signal to Mrs. Thompson that he needed to be excused. However, she was on a roll, completely ignoring the raised hand for about five to ten minutes. Even as the crimson drops began to splatter across his notes, she continued her lecture, oblivious or perhaps indifferent to the chaos unfolding right in front of her.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Mrs. Thompson reluctantly pointed to him and said, “I’ll answer your question after I finish my lecture.” Well, this was not just any regular question; it was a desperate plea for relief. But Alex, feeling a mix of irritation and determination, decided he could wait. “Fine, I’ll just sit here and bleed all over my desk,” he thought to himself. Probably not the best choice, but in that moment, it felt satisfying to take a stand, however ridiculous.

As the minutes ticked by, the situation worsened. He could feel blood dripping down his forearm, creating a small pool on his desk. It wasn’t long before he decided to swap hands, using the other arm to contain the mess. It was a small effort, but one that gave him a tiny bit of control over the situation. He focused on Mrs. Thompson’s lecture, though he couldn’t help but notice how many of his classmates were casting concerned glances his way. It was as if they could sense the impending disaster.

Eventually, the lecture came to an end, and Mrs. Thompson called on him by name, asking if his question had been answered. As he stood up, blood splattered onto the floor, and he realized just how ridiculous the scene must have looked. Both of his hands and arms were covered in blood—some still glistening; some dried like a grim badge of honor. “Can I be excused to go to the nurse’s office?” he asked calmly, trying to maintain composure despite the chaos of his situation.

Mrs. Thompson’s face turned ghostly pale as she finally registered the gravity of the situation. “Why on earth have you waited this long?! Go to the nurse’s office!” she exclaimed, a mix of shock and concern in her voice. Alex chuckled internally at her reaction while thinking about the absurdity of it all. He wished he could have said something clever, but he was just ready to get out of there and clean himself up.

As he made his way toward the door, one of his friends was sent to follow him, ensuring he didn’t collapse in the hallway due to blood loss. “I’d be more worried about the blood trail I’m leaving behind,” he quipped to his friend, who just shook his head in disbelief. The two of them headed to the nurse’s office, where Alex received the care he needed.

By the end of the day, the school had decided to implement a new policy: students no longer needed to ask for permission to go to the nurse if they were bleeding. It was a small victory, but for Alex, it felt monumental. Sometimes, standing up for oneself—even in the face of something as silly as a strict teacher—could lead to meaningful change.
