Hello Reddit. This is the first time the author is sharing this story, and while they might be a bit disorganized, the experience they’ve had might resonate with many. They work for a well-known delivery company in the Midwest and have been doing so for about a decade. Within that time, they’ve developed a suspicious eye toward a coworker named Bill, who has been with the company almost as long.

Bill is your quintessential average-looking guy in his fifties. He’s had a somewhat nomadic life as a long-haul trucker before moving back to their small town, the one he grew up in. With no spouse or children, he often jokes about his transient past, saying he would just pack up and leave whenever he got bored. At first, this lifestyle seemed harmless, even quirky, to the author and another coworker who would often joke about how he “fit the profile” of a serial killer. They laughed about Bill’s unusual living situation—he bought an old, abandoned bank and converted it into his home.

While Bill was initially just a quirky coworker, strange things began to happen a couple of years into their work relationship. One day, Bill stormed into work visibly angry about a minor inconvenience, directing his ire at their manager during a morning briefing. It seemed out of character, but perhaps he’d just had a rough morning. However, the next day, Bill showed up with deep, long scratches down his arm. When asked about the injuries, he brushed it off with a laugh, claiming they were from a “lady friend” who got a little too excited. The author and his coworker exchanged skeptical glances, wondering about the implications of Bill’s explanation.

Months later, Bill came in with a huge bruise on his face that made the author wince. His story about an opossum in his bathtub seemed implausible at best. The coworker suggested that maybe Bill was just a reckless drunk who fell down. Though the author was still skeptical, they didn’t think much more of it at the time.

The situation escalated a few years later during a particularly tense time at work. As coworkers discussed the possibility of job outsourcing, Bill made a comment that sent chills down the author’s spine. He said, “Well, if you ever need more money, you could always sell that pretty little daughter of yours,” laughing as if it were a joke. The author was appalled; his daughter was only eight years old, and he had never even mentioned her to Bill. Realizing Bill had access to his Facebook, the author quickly blocked him and became more cautious, inwardly confirming that they had every right to be wary of this man.

As time passed, more incidents raised red flags for the author. Bill appeared with a gash on his arm that looked very much like a bite, and the author found himself checking local news and missing person reports. There was a nagging thought that the injuries could be signs of something darker—perhaps defensive wounds from someone resisting Bill. When he opened up conversations again with coworkers about their suspicions, they brushed it off, advising the author to mind his own business.

Years later, Bill showed up to work with a black eye and swollen lip, claiming another coworker had gotten carried away while showing him self-defense techniques. The author was more convinced than ever that there was something off about Bill, but without any concrete evidence, they didn’t know what to do. Again, they searched local reports but found nothing alarming.

Fast forward to the present day, and Bill entered work with yet another noticeable injury, a large wound on his foot. When another coworker asked about it, Bill simply replied, “Ehh, I don’t want to bore you with the details,” and walked away. The author had been trying to push these thoughts out of his mind, but as he reflected, he realized the ease with which someone could commit crimes nearby without ever being caught. It left him feeling uneasy and questioning whether he should take action. Thoughts of following Bill or even tracking his car began creeping into his mind.

Faced with a dilemma, he was unsure how to proceed. All he had were odd injuries and unsettling comments over the years—a flimsy basis on which to confront anyone or involve the authorities. The unresolved worry hung over him like a cloud, and he pondered whether he was overreacting or if his gut feeling was onto something significant.
