woman taking phone call

It was an ordinary morning for a 21-year-old woman named Jessie. She was sipping her coffee and scrolling through her phone when the call from her doctor’s office came in. “Hi, is this Jessie? We have all of your medical records ready for transfer, but we just need to know where to send them,” the receptionist said. Confused, Jessie replied, “Wait, what? I didn’t request my records to be sent anywhere.”

The receptionist then informed her that Jessie had called three times the previous day, requesting her complete medical history, including therapy notes and medication details. Jessie’s heart sank as she listened. “No, that wasn’t me,” she said, an icy grip of realization creeping in. Who could have called her doctor pretending to be her?

After a moment’s pause, the receptionist provided an unexpected piece of information: the phone number from which the calls were made belonged to none other than Jessie’s mother. The revelation hit Jessie like a ton of bricks. Her mother had been trying to obtain private information about her therapy sessions and medications, all while disguising her identity. The very thought made Jessie feel nauseated.

Jessie’s mother had always been a controlling figure in her life, inserting herself into conversations, decisions, and relationships. Since turning 18, Jessie had made a concerted effort to assert her independence and manage her own medical affairs. She felt empowered and proud of this newfound adulthood, which only made this betrayal more painful.

After hanging up the phone, Jessie took a moment to gather her thoughts. The last thing she wanted was for her mother to have access to her medical history, especially considering her therapist had labeled her mother’s behavior as abusive. Jessie had started therapy to deal with the emotional turmoil stemming from her mother’s overstepping and manipulation, and the last thing she needed was her mother stumbling upon sensitive personal information.

Now, faced with this situation, Jessie felt a mix of anxiety and frustration. How could she stop her mother from portraying herself as Jessie to gain access to her medical records? The idea of her mother having the power to manipulate yet another aspect of her life was infuriating. Jessie picked up her phone and decided to call the doctor’s office back, hoping for some guidance.

When she reached the office again, Jessie explained the entire situation. The staff listened carefully, understanding the gravity of the issue. They reassured her that they would not release her medical records to anyone without her explicit consent. They also suggested that Jessie sign a form specifying who is allowed and not allowed to access her information. This seemed like a solid plan that could offer her some peace of mind.

After ending the call, Jessie felt a sense of relief wash over her. She was ready to take action. In addition to the release form, she decided to have a serious conversation with her mother about boundaries and the importance of respecting her privacy. She knew it wouldn’t be easy, but if she wanted to maintain her autonomy, she had to take a stand.

Later that evening, Jessie sat down with her mother. “Can we talk?” she began. As she explained her concerns, her mother’s attempts at minimizing the situation became clear. “Oh sweetie, you know I’m just trying to help,” her mother insisted, evoking guilt that Jessie had fought so hard to overcome. But Jessie was resolute. “No, Mom. This is my life and my medical history. I need you to respect my boundaries.”

The conversation was a struggle, filled with emotional barbs and defensive responses. Jessie felt the air grow heavy with tension, but she persisted. She repeated her stance, reminding her mother that her actions had real consequences and that her autonomy was non-negotiable. It was a defining moment—one that Jessie had hoped would shift the dynamic of their relationship.

Though the conversation didn’t completely resolve the tension, Jessie felt empowered to take control of her life. She sought out legal advice on how to further protect her medical records from unauthorized access and even reached out to her therapist for additional support. The situation with her mother had reminded her of the importance of setting boundaries, especially with someone who had so long violated them.

Jessie wasn’t sure what the future held with her mother, but she felt hopeful. Taking action felt like a step towards reclaiming her agency, and she knew she was on the right path—even if that path was fraught with challenges. She resolved to keep fighting for her independence, no matter how many obstacles lay in her way.
