The story kicks off almost seven years ago. A man, who we’ll refer to as the Driver, was out bar crawling with his buddies. It was a carefree night filled with laughter, drinks, and memories. He was sporting his favorite Aussie hat, an accessory that complemented nearly every outfit he owned. The night ended at a friend’s house, who we’ll call J, and they crashed there for the night. The following day, they all went their separate ways.

Later that afternoon, the Driver realized he had left his beloved hat at J’s place. He quickly shot J a message, asking him to bring it along the next time they hung out together. But as the weeks rolled on, the Driver’s requests turned into a bit of a running joke. Each time they planned a get-together, J would forget to bring back the hat, each time providing a more colorful excuse than the last.
After several months of asking, J finally dropped the bombshell: he had lost the hat. He claimed he had “turned his place upside down” trying to locate it, but to no avail. The Driver, obviously disappointed, thought it reasonable to ask J to reimburse him for the cost, which was around €70. It wasn’t a fortune, but to the Driver, it felt significant. J’s response? Outrage. He couldn’t believe the Driver would even suggest such a thing. “Pay for your hat? Are you insane?” he exclaimed. The argument ended there, awkwardly brushed off as the Driver, who wasn’t very confrontational, chose to let it slide.
Over time, the Driver brought it up jokingly now and then, especially during group gatherings where J would brag about his gig earnings. The Driver soon found himself avoiding group hangouts that included J, and as time would have it, their friend group began to dissolve as everyone grew up and took on new responsibilities.
Fast forward seven years, the Driver learned that some friends would be gathering for a week-long hangout in a different city, a chance to relive the glory days. Everyone was excited, especially J, who had a gig nearby planned during their stay. But there was a hiccup: J had lost his driver’s license due to a DUI. Thus, he needed a ride.
In the group chat, when J found out the Driver was going, he asked to tag along. The Driver, seizing the opportunity for some light-hearted karma, declared that his fee for the ride would be €103.50. This was a steep price, but he didn’t mind; it was all part of the game. J’s reaction? Pure fury. He immediately began to argue about the exorbitant fee, to which the Driver calmly itemized the costs: gas money, tolls, and, of course, the infamous hat. The rest of the group erupted into laughter at J’s expense, much to his dismay.
J, never one to take discomfort lightly, fired back with threats of what would happen if the Driver didn’t show up at his door on the day of the trip. He had expensive gear to carry, after all, and demanded that they come pick him up. The Driver stopped responding, leaving J to stew in his own frustration.
On the day of the trip, the Driver and one of their mutual friends, L, set off without a backward glance. As they drove, they laughed and contemplated J’s reaction when he realized he was being left behind. When J asked about their arrival time in the group chat, L, acting as a messenger, replied that they were already on the road. This only served to escalate J’s anger, as he hurled insults and threats, visibly irked by their apparent abandon.
Amidst all this, the Driver decided to extend a small olive branch. He told J that if he paid the full amount, they would indeed return. After some back-and-forth haggling, J ultimately relented and transferred the money. But then came the Driver’s twist: he refunded J €15, stating that since they weren’t coming back, he would only cover the fare for the ride.
With that, the Driver found himself in stitches, needing to pull over for a moment as he processed the hilarity of the situation. J, having rage-quit the group chat, would undoubtedly rejoin once he cooled off. As the Driver cracked open a beer that afternoon, he felt a triumphant sense of satisfaction. He had taken a stand after all those years—and what a way to celebrate!
