As move-out day approached, Mia found herself staring at the mess that her roommate, Jess, had left behind. The apartment had morphed into a chaotic landscape of clothes strewn about, dirty dishes piled high in the sink, and crumbs that seemed to replicate like rabbits on the kitchen counter. Mia had long accepted that she and Jess were as different as night and day when it came to cleanliness, but with mere hours to go before they needed to vacate the apartment, Mia couldn’t shake the feeling of impending doom.

Mia had always been the responsible one, the person who meticulously cleaned after every meal and organized her workspace until it sparkled. Jess, on the other hand, lived in a realm where clutter reigned supreme, and the term “cleaning up” might as well have been a foreign language. Despite numerous conversations about setting aside time to pack and clean, Jess seemed blissfully indifferent, her priority seemingly anchored in her social life rather than the impending deadline looming over them.

The day before move-out, Mia cautiously approached the subject again. “Hey, Jess,” she started, hoping to prompt some action. “We really need to start cleaning up. Tomorrow’s move-out day, remember?”

Jess looked at her, taking a sip of her iced coffee before replying with a nonchalant shrug. “Oh, I’ll get to it later,” she said, waving her hand as if swatting away an annoying fly. “I’ve got things to do today.”

That was it. Mia’s stomach twisted into knots. She had seen this movie before, and it didn’t end well. The last thing she wanted was to be stuck cleaning up after her roommate’s chaos while trying to make her own move-out preparations. With anxiety bubbling beneath the surface, she decided there was no way she could stay another night in the apartment, not when it was clear Jess wasn’t taking the situation seriously.

So, Mia began to pack her things early, methodically placing her belongings into boxes, labeling them, and ensuring everything was in order. She would leave that same day, she thought, letting Jess face the mess on her own. After all, Mia had her own reputation to preserve, and being associated with Jess’s lack of responsibility was not an option.

Before she could leave, Mia took a deep breath and headed back into the living room where Jess was still lounging, scrolling through her phone. “I’m going to head out early today,” Mia announced, trying to keep her voice steady. “I want to document our apartment before you leave it in a condition I can’t defend. Just… can you at least do your part before you leave?”

Jess barely glanced up, her eyes focused on the screen in front of her. “Sure, whatever you say,” she replied, seemingly unfazed by the urgency of the situation. That was enough for Mia. She grabbed her things and headed out the door, her heart racing as she drifted toward the parking lot.

Once Mia was safely in her car, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief wash over her. She took a deep breath and hit record on her phone. She began documenting the apartment’s state, moving from room to room and narrating the mess left behind. “Living room: still covered in clothes. Kitchen: dirty dishes piled high…,” she muttered while filming. That way, if Jess left the apartment in a disastrous condition, Mia would have proof that she had done her best to set boundaries.

As she pulled away from the apartment complex, Mia thought about what awaited her and Jess in their respective futures. She knew she’d be moving to a new place, one where she hoped cleanliness and respect for shared spaces would be prioritized. Meanwhile, Jess would have to confront the reality of her own choices… or rather, the mess they left behind.

Mia knew that she had enough evidence to protect herself should Jess decide to throw blame her way. In the end, she had done what she could, and there was a certain satisfaction in taking charge of her own life, even if that meant escaping the chaos of a messy roommate.
