Focused woman taking notes at night while working at home. Cozy and productive ambiance.

In a bustling college town, an eighteen-year-old law student, who we’ll call Emma, started her university journey with high hopes and a hefty workload looming ahead. Coming from a state away, she found herself sharing a double room with a local named Ashley. Their arrangement seemed straightforward at first—two students from different backgrounds living under the same roof. However, as they settled into their routine, Emma began to see the cracks in their roommate dynamic.

Three young women enjoying a cozy pajama party at home, laughing and capturing moments.

From the get-go, Emma noticed that Ashley was quite organized. Every weekend, Ashley would head home, where her mom would show up to help her tidy up, bring cleaning supplies, and even ensure her side of the room was pristine. Meanwhile, Emma had a single broom and a few scattered textbooks, her parents having only been there for a day to set her up. Although Ashley was cordial, they maintained a formal relationship, rarely interacting beyond the confines of their shared space unless absolutely necessary.

As the semester rolled on, the pair quickly learned about their differences in habits. Emma was more of a night owl, often staying up until the early hours of the morning to tackle her law assignments, while Ashley was an early riser who preferred the comfort of her bed by 10 p.m. This became a point of contention for them. During their initial conversations, Ashley had expressed discomfort with lights on late at night, and on that note, she had recommended that Emma find a desk lamp. Eager to be considerate, Emma took Ashley’s advice and purchased a special lamp that wouldn’t disturb her studying roommate.

However, even with the new setup, things didn’t improve as expected. Emma found that whenever she needed to study late, Ashley would turn off the lights altogether, opting instead for fairy lights—even when Emma was still working. While the fairy lights provided some ambiance, they hardly illuminated the desk adequately, making it hard for Emma to focus. Whenever Ashley would complain about Emma’s desk light being too bright, it felt like a slap in the face, especially since Emma was trying very hard to accommodate her roommate’s needs.

The roommate situation grew more complicated when the mornings came around. Ashley’s routine of waking up at 6 a.m. and taking two hours to get ready was grating on Emma’s nerves. As Ashley’s alarm blared each morning, even the softest snooze didn’t afford Emma any further rest. She found herself awake long before her preferred time, feeling exhausted and irritated by the unrelenting beep of the alarm clock. When she politely asked Ashley if she could either wake up a bit later or lower the volume of her alarm, Ashley replied with an indignant, “I can’t conform myself for you.” Emma was taken aback; it felt as if Ashley lacked awareness of her own noise level and the impact it had on their shared living space.

Additionally, Emma noticed that Ashley would comment on the snacks she brought back from study sessions. “I can smell what you’re snacking on,” Ashley would say, but the tone in which it was expressed felt less like a friendly observation and more like a criticism. It added to Emma’s mounting feelings of discontent. She was making adjustments to accommodate Ashley, modifying her habits, and yet it felt like they were playing a continual game of back and forth, where Emma always ended up on the losing side. The empathy gap between the two was glaring; Emma wanted to communicate her needs, but every time she reached out, Ashley’s responses felt dismissive.

Feeling stuck in the situation, Emma found herself reflecting on her needs and her roommate’s. She realized she wanted to embrace college life fully, build camaraderie, and perhaps find a balance in their shared space. Yet, every attempt at compromise seemed to be met with resistance, making her feel isolated in a place that was supposed to be her home away from home.

As the semester progressed, Emma was left grappling with the reality of her living situation. She sought solace in late-night study sessions and the occasional chatter with friends outside the dorm, but the fundamental disconnect with Ashley lingered. How could she get Ashley to understand that they both came from different backgrounds and needed to meet in the middle? It wasn’t just about learning the law—it was about navigating the complexities of young adult life, fostering understanding, and ideally, creating a more harmonious living environment.
