Moving out of state is always a big step, especially when it’s your first time sharing an apartment. This was the reality for a 25-year-old woman who, after years of college dorm living, found herself in a new apartment with a first-time roommate situation. The woman, who we’ll call Sarah, worked from home while simultaneously pursuing a graduate degree. Her roommate, Emily, on the other hand, had a more flexible schedule and was entering the dating scene.
It all started when Emily met a younger guy on a date. Sarah remembers the conversation they had afterward; Emily was excitedly sharing all the details, even about how the guy was trying to convince her to let him into their apartment. At that moment, Sarah raised a concern for safety, suggesting that Emily should hold off on allowing him inside until she got to know him better. After all, they had only been living together for a couple of months and needed to establish some boundaries.
Fast forward just a week later, and Emily decided to invite the guy over for a second date. Things escalated quickly when he ended up spending the night because they had plans early the next morning. Sarah didn’t see it as a big deal initially—after all, they were dating—but when he stayed over a second night, she felt something shift. One morning, she awkwardly walked into the living room, only to find Emily and this guy making out on the couch. That was the tipping point for Sarah.
Feeling frustrated, she had a heart-to-heart with Emily about how quickly the guy seemed to be getting comfortable in their shared space. Sarah expressed her discomfort, mentioning instances like him lounging around shirtless in common areas. “If it was her boyfriend whom I knew, it might have been different, but this guy was practically a stranger,” Sarah thought. All her roommate had to say was, “I’m an adult and I like him. I don’t feel unsafe with him and I’m not going to stop inviting him over.” With that, Sarah felt completely dismissed.
To add to the tension, Emily had recently mentioned some suspicious bug bites on her body, specifically on her butt and back. At first, Sarah didn’t think much of it. Perhaps it was just mosquitoes? But soon, she began noticing similar bites on herself. With her usually limited social activities, Sarah started to panic after researching signs of bed bugs. The situation escalated further when Emily revealed that her date had been over and that her aunt had visited recently. “Is this where the bugs came from?” Sarah wondered, especially since Emily had a habit of getting into bed without changing out of her outside clothes.
Deciding to take action, they carried out some necessary pest control measures to mitigate any potential spread of bugs. Just two days later, Emily invited the guy over again. Sarah was unaware that he was in their apartment until she stumbled into the kitchen in her robe, only to find him casually hanging out there with Emily. For Sarah, this felt like a blatant disregard for their previous conversation about comfort levels and hygiene. More importantly, she felt blindsided, as Emily hadn’t even bothered to inform her that he was over.
What really irked Sarah was a prior incident when the guy had bypassed their outside security gate. She texted Emily to confirm if it was him walking toward the door, and Emily casually replied, “The door was open” along with a “lol, same!! I was freaked out.” This only fueled Sarah’s frustration at the disregard for safety in their living situation. After everything, she started to contemplate whether it was time for her to find a new place. The thought of moving out was mentally and financially draining, but the continued lack of communication and respect from her roommate felt unsustainable.
All Sarah wanted was to establish boundaries and better communication, but it seemed like Emily had no intention of addressing her concerns. Now, she was stuck in a situation where she felt uncomfortable in her own home, and it was weighing heavily on her mind.
