There’s something about office dynamics that can bring out the best, but more often, the worst in people. This is a story about a young salesman, James, who took matters into his own hands in a workplace rife with frustration, especially due to the antics of his older coworker, Bob.

James had been working in sales for a few years, eager to make a name for himself. But then there was Bob, the kind of annoying older employee who took pleasure in making life difficult for those around him. Bob had been in the industry long enough to have ingratiated himself with the higher-ups, and he often used his experience as a shield for his questionable tactics. He was known to manipulate customer interactions to his advantage, disconnecting calls whenever it suited him, which made it harder for his younger colleagues to make their sales and hit bonuses. Bob’s behavior drove everyone crazy, and James was no exception.
One day, in a moment of youthful impulse and frustration, James decided he’d had enough. After watching Bob type in his password, he seized the opportunity to change Bob’s screensaver to read, “Bob is a Jackass.” It was a tongue-in-cheek joke that, unbeknownst to James, would soon spiral into chaos.
As the days passed, James enjoyed watching Bob’s obliviousness. The screensaver scrolled endlessly across Bob’s screen, drawing giggles and snickers from passing colleagues who appreciated the humor. It wasn’t long before Bob’s patience wore thin. When he finally laid eyes on the screensaver, his outburst echoed through the office: “What is this? This is defamation! Who did this?” His fury was palpable, and the laughter that followed only fueled his outrage.
Bob’s complaints escalated quickly. Before long, he marched straight into the manager’s office, demanding to know who had the gall to defame his name. The manager, caught between amusement and Bob’s fit, attempted to pacify him with a simple, “Let’s go take a walk and talk.”
But this didn’t end with a calm conversation. Shortly after, James found himself summoned to the office of Mr. Johnson, the higher-up. “What the hell are you thinking?” he started, barely containing his frustration. Explaining that it was just a joke fell on deaf ears. Johnson reminded James that using someone else’s password was a serious breach of policy. “You better hope Bob doesn’t sue us,” he warned, before delivering the verdict: a three-day suspension, effective immediately. James was told to leave the building.
Exiting through the back door, James felt a mix of excitement and disbelief. It was a Wednesday, and he had unexpectedly landed himself a five-day weekend. He couldn’t help but smile as he headed to his car. As he backed out, he heard someone frantically calling for him. “Hey, James! Peggy wants to see you!” That was the HR lady. But James, feeling free from the office constraints, decided to ignore her.
Once home, he shared the news with his wife about their impromptu beach getaway. They jumped in the car, thrilled for the chance to relax by the ocean. However, within an hour, James’ phone started ringing incessantly. “Just answer it!” his wife insisted. Reluctantly, he did. It was Peggy from HR, already annoyed. “I need you to sign some forms about your suspension.”
James replied, “Sorry Peggy, I was told to leave, and I’ve already left town. I’ll sign the forms another time.” She wasn’t pleased but had little choice. Moments later, his direct supervisor called, desperate for the sales numbers James had been compiling. “Where are you? We need those reports today!”
He couldn’t help but chuckle. “Mr. Johnson sent me home because of the screensaver. I’m over an hour away and can’t come back.” The urgency in his supervisor’s voice increased, demanding James return to provide the information he needed. Yet James stood firm, reiterating, “I can’t share my password, either. I was told not to.”
With that, he decided to turn off his phone, relishing the peace. The weekend passed with beach days, laughter, and sunshine. When he returned to work on Monday, he found that no significant fallout had occurred. Meetings had been rescheduled, and projects continued to roll along, albeit with less enthusiasm. It seemed the office could survive without him for a few days. And in a business where sales could wipe problems clean, he was back to doing what he did best.
James’s harmless prank had transformed into a mini-vacation, leaving him unscathed and feeling victorious. No one got in trouble, and life at the office resumed its usual routine, with Bob still being Bob.
