Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed that its newest ship, Carnival Tropicale, will homeport year-round in Galveston, Texas, when it debuts on April 15, 2028, according to the line’s own April 2026 newsroom announcement. That breaks with cruise industry habit: mega-ships almost always debut out of Port Canaveral, Miami, or Long Beach, not the Texas Gulf Coast.
Carnival opened bookings for the ship in a follow-up release distributed on PR Newswire, laying out sailing lengths, destinations, and the ship’s headline amenities.

Onboard, families get Sunsation Point, a multi-deck zone anchored by Carnival WaterWorks Ultra, a water park with six slides. The area also includes Fairway 66 Mini Golf, styled after Route 66, a netted Treehouse Adventure Trail, and The Vault Retrocade arcade, per Carnival’s announcement.
Dining gets a rework too. The new “Next Course” lineup includes Uku Lei Lei, a Hawaiian menu with Asian influences, and Fetaccine, a Greek-Italian mashup. The standout is Emeril’s Coastal Seafood, a partnership with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, confirmed in the reservations-open press release. Itineraries will call on Carnival’s Paradise Collection ports, including Celebration Key, RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, Isla Tropicale, and Puerto Maya, along with Progreso and Nassau.
So why Galveston over the usual Florida and California launch ports? Carnival has sailed from the Texas port for more than 26 years, and Tropicale joins Carnival Jubilee, which arrived there in 2024, making Galveston home to two of the line’s three newest ships. Rodger Rees, president and CEO of Galveston Wharves, said in the announcement carried on the Port of Galveston’s own site: “Carnival has been a valued partner for this port and this community for 26 years. We look forward to many more years of growth together.”
Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy framed it as continuity rather than novelty, saying Tropicale joining the Galveston lineup “is a celebration of both our history and our future in Texas,” a nod to the original Tropicale that sailed in the 1980s. Ben Clement, Carnival’s EVP of maritime and new builds, added that guests “can now begin planning their vacations aboard this incredible new ship.”
For Gulf Coast cruisers, it means a Vegas-inspired, six-story-waterpark ship with three years to go before it ever leaves the shipyard. Reservations are already open for April 2028 sailings.
