Walmart’s own Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter is being pulled from shelves in 19 states after state inspectors found Salmonella in it, according to the FDA’s own recall notice. The product is made by Botticelli Foods and sold exclusively at Walmart, which makes the recall a direct hit on the retailer’s private-label food line.

The contamination wasn’t caught in a lab run by the manufacturer. It surfaced when the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tested three jars pulled from a Walmart store during a routine inspection and found Salmonella present, a detail also reported by Food Network’s coverage of the recall. That’s the part worth sitting with: a store brand marketed with the same “extra scrutiny” assumption shoppers apply to house labels still got flagged by a state agency, not an internal check.

The recalled jars are 6.7 ounces, carry UPC 194346207961, and are marked with lot code LB028ACP04 and an expiration date of January 28, 2027. No illnesses have been reported so far, per the FDA notice, but the recall covers a wide swath of the country: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, and Wyoming.

Key Points

  • Botticelli Foods recalled Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter (6.7 oz, UPC 194346207961, lot LB028ACP04) after Salmonella was detected in jars sold at Walmart.
  • The contamination was found by Florida’s state agriculture department during a routine test, not by the manufacturer.
  • The product was sold in 19 states, with an expiration date of January 28, 2027, and no illnesses have been reported to date.

Salmonella infection typically causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within a few days of exposure, and it can be serious for young children, older adults, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Anyone with the recalled lot in their pantry is being told not to eat it and to return the jar to Walmart for a full refund. Botticelli Foods has also set up a dedicated line, 631-543-7000 ext. 203, and an email address, [email protected], for customers with questions, according to the FDA notice.

The bigger takeaway isn’t really about pistachio butter specifically. Private-label products go through their own supplier vetting and quality checks, but they aren’t inherently safer than a name-brand jar sitting one shelf over, and this recall is a clear reminder of that. Checking a lot code before pitching a jar in the trash takes thirty seconds, and it’s the only way to know for sure whether the one in your kitchen is affected.
