Suitcase and luggage at the airport

A long flight is not the place to test out an outfit for the first time, and yet plenty of travelers board in the exact clothing that guarantees a miserable few hours. Cabin pressure, recycled air, and hours of sitting in one position all interact with what you’re wearing more than most people expect, and the wrong choices compound quickly on a six-hour haul.

Here are six wardrobe choices worth reconsidering before your next long-haul flight, and why each one backfires somewhere over the ocean.

Tight, Restrictive Jeans

Stiff denim that fits well standing up turns uncomfortable fast once you’re seated for hours, especially as mild swelling in the legs and feet sets in during a long flight. A waistband that digs in gets worse, not better, as the flight goes on.

Brand-New Shoes

Breaking in new shoes mid-flight, especially if your feet swell slightly at altitude, is a recipe for blisters the moment you land and need to walk through an unfamiliar airport. Wear shoes you already know are comfortable, and ones that are easy to slip off and back on for security and in-flight comfort.

Heavy Metal Jewelry and Accessories

Chunky belts, layered necklaces, and metal-heavy accessories slow you down at security and add nothing but discomfort once you’re trying to relax in a cramped seat. Save the statement jewelry for after you land.

Non-Breathable Synthetic Fabrics

Cabin air is notoriously dry, and fabrics that don’t breathe well can leave you feeling clammy and overheated during a long flight, especially layered under a blanket. Natural fibers or breathable blends tend to hold up better over many hours in one seat.

Flip-Flops or Backless Sandals

Cabin temperatures can swing surprisingly cold, and open shoes leave your feet exposed with nothing to keep them warm. They’re also less practical if you need to move quickly through the cabin or stand for a while during boarding and deplaning.

Too Many Layers You Can’t Easily Remove

Overdressing for a cold airport and then being stuck in a stuffy cabin with no easy way to peel off layers is a common mistake. Dress in layers you can actually take off and store, rather than a single heavy garment you’re stuck wearing for the whole flight.
