Vacation rental photos are shot to sell a fantasy, and there’s nothing wrong with that, until you arrive and the wide-angle lens turns out to have made the living room look twice its actual size. Photos alone leave out a lot of the information that actually determines whether a stay will be comfortable, and the listings that look the most polished aren’t always the most honest.
Here are six things worth verifying beyond the photos before you book a vacation rental.
The Actual Location
Photos can crop out a busy road, an industrial lot next door, or a much longer walk to the attractions the listing implies are close by. Cross-check the pinned location on a map rather than trusting the description’s framing of “steps from” or “minutes to.”
Recent Reviews, Not Just the Overall Rating
A high overall rating can hide a string of recent complaints about cleanliness, noise, or a host who stopped responding. Read the most recent reviews specifically, since a property’s condition can change significantly after the bulk of its reviews were written.
When the Photos Were Actually Taken
Some listings feature photos from years earlier, before wear and tear, renovations, or a change in furnishings. Look for recently uploaded photos or ask the host directly if the listing photos look suspiciously pristine for an older property.
What Amenities Are Actually Confirmed as Available
A pictured hot tub, grill, or pool might be seasonal, shared with other units, or currently out of service. Message the host to confirm anything that’s a major factor in your decision to book.
The Cancellation Policy
Photos say nothing about how flexible or strict a booking is if your plans change. Read the cancellation terms before booking, especially for a longer or more expensive stay.
Host Responsiveness and Verification Status
A beautifully photographed listing from a host who takes days to respond to messages, or who has no verification badges or reviews as a host, is a bigger risk than the photos alone would suggest. Reach out with a question before booking to gauge how responsive they actually are.
