Comfort food is as much about emotional association as nutrition, but nutritionists point out that some of the most popular comfort dishes can leave people feeling worse physically once the initial satisfaction wears off.
1. Fried chicken sandwiches
The combination of heavy frying oil and refined bread tends to cause the kind of sluggishness nutritionists say undercuts any emotional lift from the meal.
2. Boxed mac and cheese
Highly processed cheese powder and refined pasta offer little sustained energy, nutritionists note, often leading to a crash shortly after eating.
3. Sugary breakfast cereal eaten as a late-night snack
A quick sugar spike followed by a crash can leave people feeling worse rather than soothed, despite the nostalgic appeal.
4. Extra-large sweetened coffee drinks
Nutritionists point out that the sugar and caffeine combination common in many comfort coffee orders can increase anxiety rather than ease it.
5. Deep-fried appetizer platters
Heavy, greasy combinations eaten in one sitting are frequently linked to the kind of post-meal fatigue that cancels out any emotional comfort.
6. Instant ramen as a full meal
Convenient and nostalgic, but nutritionists note it typically lacks the protein and nutrients needed to actually leave someone feeling steady afterward.
Nutritionists are quick to add that occasional comfort food is not inherently a problem, and the emotional value of a nostalgic dish is real. The point, they say, is simply noticing when a food that is supposed to help you feel better is doing the opposite physically.
