After going through a divorce, an architect dad decided to redefine his life by dating a woman deeply entrenched in the multi-level marketing world and who happened to be an outspoken anti-vaxxer. The architect, who had always made a comfortable living, faced unexpected challenges in his relationship with his adult children, especially considering they hadn’t seen him face-to-face for more than three years due to his pandemic-related choices.

Throughout the years, the dad had visited his son at his convenience, meaning the visits only took place when he was in town for work. During those occasional visits, he expected his son to shoulder the financial burden, whether it was covering meals or other expenses. This was the kind of dynamic that began to create an emotional distance between him and his children.
In the fall of 2025, the son’s political ambitions came to light as he ran for a seat on the city council. His mother, along with his partner, generously supported him with donations and phone calls, rallying friends and family for the campaign. Strikingly absent was the dad, who had not contributed a single cent despite having just acquired another million-dollar home. The family began to wonder just how much their father’s priorities had shifted.
Last week, the daughter and her brother finally decided to take a trip to visit their dad and his girlfriend in the small rural area where they owned a health food store. The trip was meant to be an opportunity to reconnect, but it quickly took an unexpected turn. They arrived with the understanding that their dad’s girlfriend would cover meals—after all, she asked them to “just bring wine”—and that they would split the costs of the Airbnb she picked out. Instead, they found themselves footing the whole bill for both dining and housing, an unexpected financial strain that created underlying tension.
The most egregious moment came when their father charged them for food they purchased from his own store, food he later sat down and ate with them. This move left the siblings feeling a mixture of disbelief and disappointment. The daughter, silent for a week, finally felt compelled to confront her father about what she saw as not only miserliness but a complete lack of consideration for his children.
In a heartfelt message, she laid it all out: “Dad, it’s honestly really lame that you’re bragging to some random classmate about [brother]’s public service when you didn’t donate a single dollar to his campaign. [BF]—on a government salary—donated $1,000 and made phone calls. Mom—also retired—donated $2,000 and made hundreds more phone calls.” She continued, “Especially lame considering that you expected us to support your work by buying food from your store that you ultimately ate! Do you realize that that was like charging us to spend time with you?? After we spent money on flights and food and the Airbnb to visit you?”
The daughter went further, comparing their experiences to others whose parents stepped up. “[Brother] fights for the check with [SIL]’s working-class parents. [BF]’s parents took me to Africa. Our own dad can’t cover a meal from his own store after we plan to come see him. Truly, truly lame,” she expressed, hoping her father would grasp the implications of his actions.
She acknowledged the complexity of their family situation, mentioning the controlling nature of his relationship with his girlfriend while emphasizing their desire for a better relationship with him. “I love you, but the trip to visit you was very disappointing in so many ways that I’m not even sure you can fully comprehend,” she concluded.
Her text served as an emotional release but also raised questions about whether she had crossed a line by confronting her dad about his choices. As the siblings reflect on their relationship with their father, the situation has left them wondering just how much of his affection they can count on amidst the growing chasm created by his actions.
