In a typical office setting with cubicles lining a floor, life was relatively peaceful until a new guy named Karl joined the team. Unlike most, Karl didn’t take time to ease into the office culture; instead, he quickly established himself as a source of frustration for everyone. From the get-go, he was aggressive, attempting to boss people around and often trying to offload his assignments on anyone nearby. It wasn’t long before he developed a reputation for being less than pleasant to work with.

His antics were not just limited to his interactions with colleagues. One day, he swapped out his old chair for a newer one from a neighboring cubicle, claiming his bad back necessitated the change, despite the original owner’s objections. He also had a habit of “borrowing” supplies from other desks instead of utilizing the supply cabinet on the floor above them. But his biggest faux pas came when he decided to take over a small room meant for casual meetings as his own personal office.
What was once a shared space for collaborative discussions quickly became Karl’s domain. Papers, a coffee cup, and eventually his laptop appeared on the small table within. One morning, the sight of Karl’s cleared-out cubicle confirmed it: everything was moved to this tiny room, which he had now claimed for himself. A sign with his name on it hung on the door—a bold declaration that did not sit well with the rest of the team. Each time they confronted him about it, he would simply respond with his go-to phrase: “First come, first served.”
The situation escalated when Karl took on the role of meeting coordinator for an annual gathering that involved important visitors from out of town. He began to monopolize the communication with these guests, frustrating their administrative assistant in the process. To add insult to injury, he didn’t invite anyone else from the office to partake in the planning or meetings leading up to the event. It was his show, and he wanted to run it without any interference.
However, one colleague caught wind of the meeting date. Realizing that Karl hadn’t reserved the larger conference room for that day, they decided it was time for some clever retaliation. Exploiting Karl’s own motto, the colleague reserved the conference room, much to the admin assistant’s amusement.
On the eve of the big meeting, five colleagues executed a plan. They transported numerous paper files and office chairs to the now-reserved conference room, effectively cluttering it with their work materials. They took over the space, setting up a PowerPoint presentation and working diligently on their laptops, despite the impending arrival of Karl’s important visitors.
As the clock ticked toward 9:00 AM, they could hear voices approaching down the hall. When Karl arrived at the door with the guests in tow, his reaction was priceless. A look of utter disbelief crossed his face as he took in the scene before him. Five colleagues were in the midst of their meeting, completely unfazed by his presence. When Karl demanded they vacate the conference room for his important visitors, they calmly informed him that they had reserved the space weeks ago and were actively in their own meeting.
Karl, flustered and clearly outmaneuvered, marched over to the administrative assistant. He argued that he needed the room for his important meeting, but she stood firm, reiterating that the conference room had been reserved. As Karl returned to confront the group, one colleague simply repeated his own phrase back to him: “First come, first served.” It was a moment of sweet justice, as the table flipped on him.
The irony wasn’t lost on anyone. While Karl’s group scrambled to find an alternative room on the floor above, the boss, who had no idea about the chaotic mess or Karl’s unauthorized takeover, began receiving harsh emails from bewildered visitors. When she eventually confronted Karl about the complaints, she discovered that he had evacuated his cubicle, leaving her utterly baffled.
In the end, the team’s clever maneuvering put an end to Karl’s reign over the small meeting room, forcing him back to his original cubicle, where he could no longer impose his authority. And just like that, the disruption he had caused was neatly wrapped up in a dose of office revenge.
