In a world where office politics often feel like a battleground, one employee found herself in the middle of a chaotic drama that would ultimately lead to unexpected revenge. The protagonist of this story, referred to as OOP (Original Poster), worked in a company where tasks were managed in a haphazard manner. Her boss, keen on saving costs, didn’t realize that she had been quietly automating the workload of six employees using her own tools and software.

OOP had a challenging start. She was provided with a clunky Pentium 4 dual core computer that was almost laughable in the age of tech. Frustrated by its inefficiency, she sought help from the company’s IT guy, who was located hundreds of miles away. After some back and forth, she managed to get remote access to the company’s servers from her own personal laptop. This opened the door for her to digitize and streamline many of her responsibilities, making her job much easier. However, her boss mistook this efficiency for idleness, leading to increasing tension in the workplace.

Unbeknownst to her boss, OOP was doing the work of several people, consolidating various tedious tasks into quick processes thanks to her programming skills. When whispers of a potential downsizing reached her ears—specifically, that her job could be rolled into the responsibilities of underpaid college students—OOP took the precaution of backing up all her work onto her personal Google Drive.

The day arrived when she was summoned to a meeting with the suits. As they gathered around the table, her boss bluntly declared, “Well kiddo, I’m sad to say that I was wrong. I shouldn’t have hired you. You’re fired.” OOP was taken aback, but her shock quickly turned into a sense of calm determination. She extended her hand for a goodbye, only to be told to sit back down. Her boss had a list of demands for her, despite having just terminated her employment.

Realizing he was trapped by his own impulsive decision, OOP decided to play along. She informed her boss that she wouldn’t feel comfortable accessing the company’s network anymore now that she was technically no longer an employee. This response only fueled her boss’s fiery temper. After a heated exchange that involved him storming out to her car and demanding she return, she drove off to safety, leaving her furious boss behind.

In the following days, OOP settled into her new reality of unemployment, but not without making the best of a bad situation. She enrolled in master’s classes and enjoyed extended unemployment benefits due to the pandemic. Meanwhile, her former boss, grappling with the fallout of his decision, tried to call OOP multiple times, seeking her help. However, she played her cards close to her chest, allowing him to stew in the consequences of his rash actions.

Eventually, the tables turned as her former boss reached out for assistance with a looming state audit that the company was failing. He offered to pay her five times her previous salary, but she wasn’t having it. OOP countered, saying she’d only consider helping for twenty times her hourly rate, fully aware of the leverage she now held. After some negotiations through his daughter, who was the company’s comptroller, they settled on a deal that meant she’d earn a hefty sum to help the company avert catastrophe.

Once the agreement was in place, she accessed her old company files and found the automated tools she had created. She spent a couple of weeks crafting organized documentation and compiling the data needed for the audit. Each hour she put in was at a rate that would leave her financially secure for some time to come.

Ultimately, the audit passed, and the company was saved from potential disaster. OOP had not only taken back control but had also turned the situation into a lucrative opportunity that benefitted her in multiple ways. As she reflected on the bizarre series of events—her boss’s impulsiveness combined with her own strategic foresight—she couldn’t help but find humor in the chaos that had unfolded, all stemming from that fateful meeting.
