In the world of small businesses, the dynamics between bosses and their employees can sometimes lead to interesting scenarios, especially when it comes to IT departments. One such story comes from a new IT technician who found himself in a bizarre and frustrating predicament with his boss over lunch breaks, all while navigating through a “mission-critical” outage.

This technician, let’s call him Alex, had recently landed his first job in IT after years of blue-collar work. He had been hired by a small manufacturing company that had never employed an IT worker before. The owner, who had been wearing multiple hats, was less than tech-savvy and had little interest in the nitty-gritty of network management. With his associate’s degree in IT and a specialization in networking, Alex was ready to dive into the challenges ahead.

Just three days before the main event of this saga, Alex had been tasked with troubleshooting a critical computer that ran the shipping software. This system was the backbone of the company’s logistics, and when it went down, hundreds of packages awaited dispatch. Alex suggested an immediate re-imaging of the machine—essentially, resetting it to a stable state. However, the boss insisted otherwise, preferring to keep Windows installed and painstakingly delete and reinstall programs one by one. Alex complied, despite knowing it would take much longer and requiring hours of troubleshooting with third-party support.

When Alex finally clocked out for lunch after a longer-than-usual session, he had already missed the usual schedule by about thirty minutes. Upon his return, he was greeted by a fuming boss. The owner was livid that Alex had taken his lunch outside the designated hours—12 PM to 1 PM—and made it crystal clear that company policy dictated these break times. Alex nodded, understanding the importance of policies but frustrated that he was reprimanded for prioritizing urgent work over a predetermined schedule.

Fast forward to the following week, and things took a turn for the worse. At exactly 12:25 PM, the entire network went down without warning. Panic ensued as employees were unable to access any network resources, and the factory floor ground to a halt. Alex had not yet taken his lunch that day, still trying to troubleshoot issues from earlier. He quickly surmised that the outage could be related to the unshielded Ethernet cables running through the building, suspecting interference from the high-voltage woodworking machines. But he hit a snag—being a subletter in the building meant he had no access to the critical switches and routers that managed the network.

Realizing the gravity of the situation yet feeling powerless to act, Alex decided to capture what he could. He set up Wireshark, a tool that would track the network traffic, and initiated a continuous ping test to see if any connections could be made. With the diagnostics running, he clocked out for lunch right at 12:30 PM. This wasn’t an act of defiance; it was a compliance with the very rules his boss had insisted upon.

When Alex returned from his break, he found his boss standing at his desk, arms crossed, with a slightly smug look on his face. “The network is up, by the way!” he announced, trying to take credit for the restoration of connectivity. It turned out that the network had magically resolved itself while Alex was on lunch. Despite feeling a rush of satisfaction knowing he had done everything within his power to troubleshoot the issue, he kept quiet, refraining from mentioning his earlier suggestions about the network infrastructure.

This incident left a clear yet unspoken tension between Alex and his boss. While the owner continued to enforce his lunch policies, it was clear that the technician had the last laugh. Following the episode, Alex was more confident in navigating the office politics, knowing that sometimes compliance with the rules set by management can lead to unexpected outcomes—especially when they don’t fully understand the technical landscape.

In the end, while the dynamics of their relationship may not have shifted dramatically, Alex had gained valuable experience. He learned that sometimes the best course of action is to follow the letter of the law, even if it stings a little.
