In the chaotic world of college life, sharing an apartment with roommates can be both a blessing and a curse. One college student, who we’ll refer to as “Jess,” found herself navigating the murky waters of roommate relationships when a series of strange disappearances began to unfold in her shared living space. As the missing items piled up, Jess couldn’t shake the feeling that something more sinister was at play.

The saga began when Jess returned home after being out of town for a week. She noticed her bedroom door had been left unlocked during her absence, and when she looked around her room, something felt off. Her makeup organizer, which she was sure she had arranged just before leaving, looked disheveled. After a closer inspection, Jess was shocked to find that four expensive makeup products were missing: a bronzer, a blush stick, a skin tint, and, most devastating of all, a discontinued lip gloss that she adored. The lip gloss was a prized possession; Jess never took it out of her room, fearing it might be lost forever. So, it was puzzling—and unsettling—when she discovered it was gone.

Immediately, Jess began questioning her roommates, hoping someone had seen her missing makeup. Unfortunately, they all denied any knowledge of the situation. One roommate even suggested that the new addition to their living arrangement might be responsible, but Jess quickly dismissed that theory; after all, she had noticed some of her favorite products missing before the new roommate even moved in.

This wasn’t an isolated incident. Earlier in the semester, Jess had experienced a puzzling loss of her favorite lip balm. After searching high and low, she eventually spotted “Becky,” one of her roommates, using an almost-empty Summer Fridays lip balm—the same shade Jess had lost. It felt strange, but Jess tried to convince herself that it was purely coincidental. When she replaced the lost balm, she felt a renewed sense of security. However, her hopes were dashed just three days later when that new balm vanished as well, disappearing on a night when it was only Jess and her roommates at home, with no guests or parties to blame.

Frustration began to creep in as Jess realized that she had never had a problem losing belongings before moving into this apartment. Items that had always been safe and secure were now inexplicably disappearing. Adding to her worries, Jess recalled a previous incident where she had discovered her Xbox controller in Becky’s room, taken without asking, and never returned. Compounding these oddities was the disappearance of a favorite shirt last seen in Becky’s possession. It had become a running theme—Jess’s belongings were vanishing with alarming frequency.

One evening, while searching for her missing lip balm, Jess overheard a seemingly innocuous comment from Becky’s boyfriend. He jokingly referred to the lip balm as “the new one you just got.” In isolation, the comment wouldn’t raise many eyebrows, but when Jess considered all the suspicious circumstances surrounding her belongings, it struck her as odd. Could it be that the joking comments were more than just random humor?

As the days passed and her belongings continued to elude her, Jess’s concerns deepened. She began to wonder if she was losing her grip on reality or if there was indeed a pattern emerging. Had she really been careless in her ownership, or was she living with someone who had taken an interest in her belongings? The thought gnawed at her, and Jess felt increasingly trapped in a situation where her personal space was being invaded—intrudes without consent.

With each passing day, the list of her missing items grew heavier on her mind. The makeup fiasco, the lip balm incidents, the Xbox controller, and the lost shirt all contributed to a mounting feeling of distrust. Jess decided she had enough of just trying to sweep the incidents under the rug. After careful consideration, she resolved to install a hidden camera to gather evidence and find closure on who was the cause of her missing items. Would it reveal that she was merely paranoid, or would it confirm her suspicions of living with a thief?

Jess’s story serves as a stark reminder of how easily boundaries can be crossed in shared living situations. It’s a narrative that speaks to the challenges of establishing trust in close quarters—especially when belongings start to go missing and strange behavior begins to emerge.
