It was one of those classic fall weekends where the air had just a hint of crispness, and the leaves were turning golden. Invitations had been sent, and a couple of weeks ago, my husband received one for his colleague’s wedding. I was excited to attend, as I love weddings, but I had little idea of the spectacle and confusion that awaited me later that evening.

The ceremony was held in a beautiful Episcopal church. The stained glass windows glowed in the afternoon light, and the vows exchanged echoed solemnly off the high walls. But despite the length of the ceremony, the real shock came later that night during the reception.
After a delightful dinner filled with laughter and clinking glasses, it was finally time for the much-anticipated first dance. The DJ took the microphone and announced the couple with a flourish. Everyone turned their attention to the dance floor, where the newlyweds prepared to share their first moment as a married couple. As the opening notes began to play, an air of excitement filled the room.
And then, without warning, the unmistakable twang of “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood rang through the speakers. I felt my jaw drop. Looking around, I noticed the reactions from the guests were all over the place. About 30% of the audience wore expressions of shock, disbelief, and confusion. Another 20% had put on poker faces, trying to mask their surprise, while the remaining half either didn’t recognize the song or plainly didn’t care.
As the couple swayed to the beat, lost in their own world, I leaned over to my husband, whispering, “Is this really happening?” He merely shrugged, equally perplexed. For a moment, I searched for logic in this bizarre choice. Had they picked a fun, whimsical song? No. Had they chosen a romantic ballad that spoke to their journey together? Also, no. Instead, they went with an anthem about revenge and infidelity. I couldn’t shake the feeling that this choice was everything a first dance shouldn’t be.
“Do you think they’ve had some past experiences?” I asked my husband, my voice barely above a whisper. “I mean, why this song?” But he shook his head. “I don’t know. There’s no history of cheating as far as I know. They seemed genuinely happy.” My thoughts raced—perhaps they just loved the song? Or maybe they had a quirky sense of humor that led them to choose it as a lighthearted jab at relationships? But then again, wouldn’t the first dance be the time for something sweet and romantic?
As the dance progressed, I couldn’t help but glance around. A few people were chuckling, probably thinking they had stumbled into a comedy show. Others looked around with wide eyes, as if searching for someone to explain what was happening. “Are they serious?” one woman near me whispered to her friend, who shrugged helplessly in response.
Meanwhile, the couple twirled and dipped, completely unfazed by the absurdity of it all. They smiled confidently at each other, clearly enjoying what was supposed to be a cherished moment. It seemed that as others processed what was happening, the newlyweds were lost in their own narrative, unbothered by the opinions of the room.
By the time the song reached its climax, people had begun to loosen up. Laughter spread as guests started to clap in rhythm. Some even joined in, singing the chorus, and it felt almost like a twisted party anthem had just been born. I began to see the humor; perhaps this was their way of breaking the mold of tradition. The joy of the couple prevailed, attracting us into their infectious sense of fun.
When the dance finally ended, they embraced, and the crowd erupted in applause, some mixed in with laughter. It was a moment that felt surreal but somehow bonded the room in its unexpected choice. As they exited the dance floor, I couldn’t help but wonder: had they just set a new trend? Was “Before He Cheats” the new “Something Blue” or “At Last”? Only time would tell.
As the evening continued, I still couldn’t shake my initial shock, but I certainly appreciated the daring choice of the couple. What might have been seen as a faux pas turned into a light-hearted, unforgettable moment. And as for the song—they had clearly chosen it for a reason, whether it was humor, nostalgia, or something entirely unexpected.
