It all began on a seemingly ordinary Friday night. A group of high school friends decided to celebrate the end of the week with a little too much alcohol. Among them was a teenager, who, like many of his peers, thought he could handle his drinks. Spoiler alert: he couldn’t. He lost track of how many beers he had downed, but the universe had a wild surprise in store for him when he stumbled home that night.

The next morning, the sun was shining bright, almost too bright for the hungover teen. He squinted as he rolled over, still trying to piece together the scattered memories of the previous night. But as he looked around his bedroom, his eyes widened in disbelief. There, in the corner of his room, stood a three-meter tall tree, roots and all. Yes, a tree. He sat up, heart racing, trying to comprehend the absurdity of the situation.
Confused, he dragged himself out of bed and headed for the kitchen, hoping for some clarity. Instead, what greeted him was a trail of dirt leading from his bedroom, through the front door, and down the stairs. Curiosity piqued, he followed the mess, his mind racing with questions. How did this happen? Where did the tree come from? Was he hallucinating?
Following the dirt trail led him to the entrance of his apartment building, where he spotted a familiar sight: the hotel down the street, which had two large pots flanking its entrance. One pot was filled with soil, the other proudly displaying a giant tree, eerily similar to the one now occupying his bedroom. His heart sank, and the memory of the previous night rushed back with horrifying clarity. He had seen that tree and, in a drunken stupor, decided it was a good idea to take it. His impulse had driven him to uproot the tree from its cozy hotel pot and drag it all the way back home.
After a couple of days of trying to nurture the tree in a smaller pot he found, it became apparent that the plan to keep this botanical crime a secret was doomed. The tree wasn’t thriving; it needed a proper home. Embarrassment washed over him as he thought about returning to the hotel. How would he explain that he’d stolen their tree while blackout drunk? Not wanting to face the music, he called his mom instead.
“Mom,” he said sheepishly, “I kinda… took a tree.”
His mom paused, probably expecting the worst. “You didn’t steal it, did you?” she asked, her tone a mix of amusement and disbelief. He confessed everything, the wild night, his ill-fated decision, and there was a moment of silent judgment before she burst out laughing. “Well,” she said, “I could use a new tree for the garden. Bring it over!”
Relieved to find someone willing to take the tree off his hands without judgment, he set out on his next mission: transporting the tree from his apartment to his mom’s garden. The walk was surreal; he couldn’t help but chuckle at the absurdity of it all. Here he was, a teenager, lugging a tree through the neighborhood, while passersby looked at him like he was a little unhinged. But honestly, he couldn’t care less. This was a win-win: his mom would get a new tree, and he wouldn’t have to face the wrath of hotel staff or any possible legal consequences.
Once in his mom’s garden, the tree found a new home and began to flourish under her care. Over the years, it grew taller and stronger, transforming into a beautiful centerpiece that drew compliments from neighbors and family alike. Every time he visited, he was reminded of his reckless act, but more importantly, he was reminded of how it had led to something beautiful. His mom often teased him about it, saying their garden had a “living reminder” of his youthful antics.
Years passed, and that tree became a part of the family. It stood as a quirky story to tell at gatherings, a conversation starter, and a testament to a wild night that could have ended in disaster but instead became a cherished memory. Every so often, he would glance at the tree, smirking at the thought of the teenage version of himself who had made such an impulsive choice. And hey, at least it wasn’t the worst thing he could have brought home!
