In the world of gym etiquette, it seems like some people never got the memo. A recent incident shared on Reddit by user /u/RxMoreCowbell1 perfectly encapsulates just how far some folks can push their entitlement, turning what should be a shared space into their personal playground.

The story unfolds in an apartment complex gym, which, while not a colossal fitness center, is nice enough to entice residents to ditch their old memberships. On this particular evening, the gym was bustling with fellow gym-goers, all adhering to the unspoken rules of respect and consideration. That is, until one loud character decided to break that unspoken agreement.

As the author was getting into their workout, a guy in the gym received a phone call. Instead of stepping out or at least lowering his voice, he began chatting loudly, and to the horror of those around him, he put the call on speakerphone. What followed was an excruciatingly tedious conversation between two friends, complete with laughter and inside jokes, completely oblivious to the irritation building amongst the gym’s patrons.

After a few minutes of this disruptive nonsense, the author decided enough was enough. Counting down silently from ten, they lost their patience by the time they reached zero. With a smile, they leaned over and politely asked the guy to take his call outside. However, the response was nothing short of outrageous. Instead of recognizing the legitimate request, the speakerphone warrior gave the author an incredulous look, as if they had just demanded his firstborn child.

Rolling his eyes dramatically, it was clear he believed that the world was his stage, and everyone else was merely background noise to his life. Eventually, he ended the call, seemingly begrudgingly, but that wasn’t where the saga ended. In a classic display of entitlement, rather than showing any humility or acknowledgment for his disruptive behavior, he reached for a pair of AirPods and plugged them in. Apparently, this was his way of saying he was now ready to continue his conversation without disturbing anyone—immediately after disrupting the entire gym for the last several minutes.

One can only imagine the scene: others in the gym, trying to focus on their workouts, exchanging puzzled glances as the guy seemed completely unfazed by the discomfort he had caused. It was as if he had a special license to ignore the basic principles of communal space, convinced that his need for connection outweighed everyone else’s right to a peaceful workout environment.

This scenario highlights a broader issue that many have faced, especially in public spaces where etiquette is expected but not always practiced. The author reflected on this double dose of entitlement and mused about it in their post, tapping into a shared frustration that many feel in similar situations. Experiences like these can make anyone want to channel their inner Thanos for a moment, imagining a world with a significant reduction in the number of people who exhibit this kind of behavior.

Indeed, the gym can become a microcosm for society at large, illustrating the everyday encounters with those who operate under the assumption that the world revolves around them. For the author and those trapped in the same space, it was a reminder of how a single person’s actions can ripple out and affect an entire environment. While they didn’t set out to make a spectacle, they became a part of the audience for yet another performance of “Me, Myself, and I.”

As the gym-goers continued their workouts, perhaps there was a collective hope that the next time someone took a loud call, they might just think twice—or, at the very least, remember to put on their headphones before dialing.
