Three women enjoy a relaxing conversation on a rocky beach, sitting on large logs by the sea.

It was meant to be a fun day at the beach, a reunion of sorts for a trio of friends. “Sophie” (23F), who had been best friends with “Tom” (23M) since childhood, was excited to spend time with him and get to know his new girlfriend, “Alexa” (24F). After a long day under the sun, they returned to Tom’s apartment to wash off the salty water and sand.

Once inside, Sophie asked if she could take a shower. Tom was more than happy to oblige. After a refreshing rinse, Sophie realized she had forgotten to bring a towel. Thinking it was no big deal, she asked Tom if he could grab one for her. He grabbed a towel, opened the bathroom door just enough to stick his hand through, and she reached out to take it, grateful for the quick help.

What Sophie didn’t expect was the tension that would follow. After Tom went out onto the balcony for a smoke, Sophie found herself alone with Alexa. It started innocently enough until Alexa abruptly turned to her, eyebrows raised and tone accusatory. “Why would you ask Tom to give you a towel?” she demanded.

Sophie was taken aback. “I just forgot to bring one. It’s not a big deal.” But apparently, it was a big deal in Alexa’s mind. She insisted that Sophie shouldn’t have asked Tom for a towel because, “we’re both girls.” It was a strange way to frame it, and Sophie couldn’t help but wonder why it was inappropriate for Tom to hand her something, regardless of gender.

Aleixa continued, raising the stakes of the conversation. She claimed that it was inappropriate for Tom to see other women naked, and Sophie quickly countered with, “He didn’t see me naked; he just gave me a towel!” Lexa shrugged this off, asserting that it was still a violation of some invisible line she had drawn.

“He’s a faithful man,” she stated flatly, before turning the focus back to Sophie. “You were trying to hit on him.”

Sophie felt frustration bubbling up. “I’m a lesbian, Alexa. This isn’t some closeted flirtation. I just need a towel!” But Alexa was unmoved, stating that it didn’t matter that Sophie was a woman. The fact remained that he was a straight man, and therefore, the rules of appropriateness somehow still applied.

Just then, Tom returned from his smoke break, and Alexa switched gears, a smile plastered on her face as if nothing had happened. “Oh, just talking about the beach!” she chirped, leaving Sophie feeling uneasy. It was clear that Alexa didn’t intend to let Tom in on the tension brewing in the living room.

After Tom joined them, Sophie felt the weight of the conversation linger unaddressed. She was torn between wanting to bring it up with Tom and not wanting to seem like she was gossiping about his girlfriend. More importantly, she didn’t want to create a rift in their friendship. After all, Tom had been her best friend for years. He had always been a supportive ally, and she didn’t want to jeopardize that bond over what felt like a misunderstanding.

In the days that followed, Sophie wrestled with her thoughts. Had she really done something wrong by asking for a towel? It seemed so innocent, yet the way Alexa had reacted made it feel like there was something sinister behind her request. “Maybe I should have asked Alexa instead,” she pondered, but the notion felt silly. Why should it matter who she asked for a towel? Was it now a crime to have friendships across genders?

She considered talking to Tom about it, but the last thing she wanted was to stir up drama. Instead, she decided to seek out opinions from others online, thinking maybe someone could give her a fresh perspective on the situation. She posted her story on a popular subreddit, wondering if she was the one in the wrong or if Alexa’s reaction was overblown.

As she awaited replies, Sophie couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that had settled in her stomach. All she had wanted was a simple day with friends, yet here she was, second-guessing herself over a towel.
