Two business professionals in conversation outside an urban office building.

Once upon a time, a young man named Jake found himself drifting into a strange and isolating world after the pandemic hit. At just 21 years old, he had already faced some significant challenges. Like many others, his high school experience was altered beyond recognition. COVID-19 turned social life upside down, and parental restrictions left him feeling cut off from the outside world.

Jake, who was once active and bright, started to feel like an introvert. The restriction on his phone use didn’t help, and as time passed, he lost his confidence in communicating, especially with women. Adding on top of that, he struggled with severe acne, which led to teasing and self-hatred. Stuck in a negative feedback loop of isolation and low self-esteem, he gradually convinced himself that he wasn’t worth anyone’s time or affection.

Then, along came Lisa. She was a former classmate who he had always found interesting, and as they started chatting online, Jake felt a flicker of hope. It was almost surreal to have a female friend whom he connected with on a deeper level. The conversations flowed effortlessly, and for a brief moment, Jake allowed himself to believe that he had a friend who valued him.

However, as the months rolled on, Lisa began to pull away. Jake initially brushed it off, reminding himself that everyone gets busy. Yet, the more she ignored him, the more he convinced himself he must have misread their connection. Seeking clarity, he confronted her, only to learn that she had developed feelings for him. This revelation sent Jake’s self-worth soaring.

At that moment, he thought things would change for the better. Maybe they would grow closer. Perhaps this could be the catalyst for his transformation. But it wasn’t long before the euphoria of her confession faded, replaced by an even more profound silence. Lisa continued to ignore him, leaving Jake feeling more alone than ever.

In a desperate attempt for connection, Jake fell into a dangerous spiral. He began stalking her social media accounts multiple times a day, analyzing every post and checking up on her interactions. He knew all her followers and would closely monitor her activity, even going as far as to watch old family videos just to catch glimpses of her. It was compulsive and unhealthy, but Jake felt like he had no control over it.

As if this wasn’t enough, he soon started experiencing something even stranger. He would dream up entire conversations with Lisa. These weren’t just fleeting thoughts; they felt vivid and real. Jake would wake up and scramble to check his phone, convinced they had actually happened. The lines between reality and his imagined scenarios began to blur in unsettling ways.

Weeks passed, and Jake found himself trapped in a web of fabricated interactions. His mind created complex dialogues with Lisa, complete with laughter and heartfelt exchanges. It was comforting, but troubling. He had built an entire fantasy around her, and he began to believe those moments were genuine.

Then came the moment that would change everything. Lisa became active on social media once again, and Jake mustered the courage to talk to her. Feeling bold, he mentioned one of the fake conversations he had crafted. Lisa’s response shattered his illusion: “This never happened.”

Confused and hurt, Jake pressed her, bringing up other moments they had never shared. Lisa laughed it off, thinking he was joking. But it wasn’t a joke to Jake; it was a crash landing from a delusion he had created in his mind. It hit him like a ton of bricks—he had lost touch with reality.

Feeling overwhelmed, Jake realized he needed help. That evening, he decided to seek professional advice, which was a big step for him. He talked to a doctor who recommended he limit his phone use and prescribed medication. Things felt daunting, but there was a flicker of hope as he scheduled his first therapy appointment.

Jake had been navigating a dark period in his life, but now, he finally understood he couldn’t rely on imagined connections. He was ready to face the real world again, albeit with a bit of work ahead.
