Two cheerful girls stand in a classroom with a math-covered chalkboard, ready for learning.

In a confession that seems ripped straight from the pages of a middle school drama, a woman in her early twenties, identified as (23F), has finally decided to share the story of her jealousy-fueled sabotage of a former classmate’s social life. The classmate, referred to as Allie (also 23F), unwittingly became the target of an emotional rollercoaster driven by envy that would span over several years.

The origin of this story can be traced back to the sixth grade when the narrator first became aware of Allie. While waiting to be picked up from school, her mother casually remarked on Allie’s cuteness, igniting a flame of jealousy that would only grow hotter with time. “I hadn’t really interacted with her yet, but I noticed how she was part of a relatively large friend group from mixed schools,” she recalled. This recognition sparked an obsession that would lead to some shocking decisions.

Despite not having classes with Allie in the sixth grade, the narrator fixated on every interaction, no matter how minor. One fateful lunch, while casually chatting with Allie’s friend Kayley, she noticed Allie’s agenda open on the table. There it was—an opportunity. A note with Allie’s password stared back at her, and the narrator memorized it, motivated by the desire to unravel Allie’s social standing.

Upon returning home, she logged into Allie’s various school accounts and began her descent into a shadowy playground of deception. She explored Allie’s activities on educational platforms and even tracked her chats on Gmail, careful to delete any traces of her intrusion. The thrill of going unnoticed only fueled her actions. It wasn’t long before Allie’s friends started to notice something was off; she got a new email address after being hacked, but it didn’t deter the narrator.

Even during the summer between sixth and seventh grade, the obsession continued. The narrator manipulated conversations, posing as Allie in chats with her friends while instigating tension. She particularly targeted a girl named Mel, who felt inadequate compared to Allie’s seemingly ideal circumstances.

As seventh grade rolled around, the excitement of sharing half of her classes with Allie was immediate—yet so was the frustration of witnessing Allie maintain her tight-knit friend group. Complicating matters was the fact that the narrator had a crush on a boy named Stan, who had shifted his affections from one of Allie’s friends to Allie herself. Determined to get Stan’s attention, the narrator latched herself to Allie, attempting to draw focus away from Allie’s popularity.

By the end of seventh grade, the narrator discovered that friction was brewing within Allie’s friend group, especially with three girls: Kelly, Tiff, and Mel. Armed with this information, she took it upon herself to fan the flames of discord, sending messages to Chloe and Kayley, falsely claiming that Kelly had been speaking ill of them. As eighth grade unfolded, Allie slowly lost her friends, leaving only Kayley and Annica by her side—a result that seemed to validate the narrator’s manipulative efforts.

The tide eventually turned, however. Just a month into eighth grade, Allie’s health issues forced her into homeschooling. This twist threw a wrench in the narrator’s plans, as Allie’s absence didn’t create the social opening she had hoped for. And despite the chaos she had sown, Stan still never noticed her.

Fast forward to high school, where Allie eventually reconnected with some of her former friends, including Kelly and Mel. Despite a rekindling of acquaintanceship, it was clear that genuine friendship was a thing of the past. The narrator watched from the sidelines, realizing that her efforts had not only affected Allie’s relationships but also left a lasting imprint on her own life.

In what is an intriguing and personal reflection, the narrator remains uncertain if Allie or her former friends ever realized there was an outside force at play in their turbulent friend dynamics. What’s more curious is the residual impact on the narrator herself, who now grapples with the weight of her past actions.
