About a decade ago, just as he was starting high school, a boy was introduced to a man his mother had begun dating. This man had recently been released from prison, and the boy’s mother assured him and his younger sister that it would be a temporary arrangement. However, just a week later, the relationship seemed to solidify, and what had been a safe and peaceful home quickly transformed into a battleground of toxicity.

From that point forward, the boy’s life, which had previously offered a respite from the challenges of school and social struggles, became a nightmare. The constant bickering between his mother and her boyfriend filled the house with an unsettling atmosphere. The walls that once provided security now echoed with arguments, and the boy found himself begging his mother to reconsider her choices. But instead of taking his pleas seriously, she laughed off his concerns, even joking that a therapist might be needed.
His grandmother was no help either. Instead of stepping in to support the boy and his sister, she enabled their mother’s decisions, promising action that never materialized. As time passed, the situation deteriorated further until one night, everything changed. The boy awoke to screams—something he would never forget. He had assumed it was just another fight, but as he knocked on the door, he was met with violence. The boyfriend had turned aggressive, and the boy watched in horror as he assaulted his mother.
In the chaos, the boy felt paralyzed. Despite wanting to intervene, he was frozen as the confrontation spilled from the bedroom into the living room. When he finally found the courage to act, trying to wrestle the man away from his mother, he was met with a punch to the jaw that sent him crashing to the ground. The aftermath was a blur—his younger sister rushed to check on him, and the police were called, leading to the boyfriend’s arrest. He was charged not only with assault but also with stealing the boy’s mother’s car.
Shockingly, after just a month, the boy’s mother invited him back into their home. The boy remembered feeling an unshakable tremor in his hands and anguish crawling up his spine. The violent episodes had shaken him to his core, leaving behind signs of what might very well be PTSD. He graduated from high school shortly after, but the home life remained a swirling tempest of dysfunction, worsened by relatives who moved in, bringing more chaos.
Eventually, after yet another fight with the boyfriend, he finally left for good, but the boy bore the brunt of the fallout. His mother blamed him for everything, claiming she needed the boyfriend’s help, particularly to retrieve her car. There were no questions about how he was feeling, nor any support offered to the boy. Instead, he was told to find a job, but he was still struggling to understand himself, let alone navigate the world outside.
He eventually got a job at Krispy Kreme and worked there for about four years. However, the mental strain from his experiences continued to weigh heavily on him. He reached a tipping point when he realized that he was unable to cope with social interactions; the pressure of being around people became unbearable. Withdrawing from social engagements and ultimately quitting his job was a painful decision, but it felt inevitable.
In the years that followed, the boy felt increasingly isolated, trapped in a toxic environment that continually invalidated his feelings. Despite his efforts to move forward, he found himself stuck in patterns of despair, feeling the weight of others’ expectations crushing him. Every attempt to find stability crumbled under the pressure of rejection and fear, leading him to question his worth and priorities.
The boy felt he was caught in a spiraling cycle of blame, both from his family and from within. He struggled with intrusive thoughts that insisted he hadn’t done enough to improve his situation, yet mounting evidence from his reality suggested otherwise. He wrestled with feelings that seemed no one around him cared to acknowledge—sadness was dismissed, anger was demonized, and thoughts of despair were silenced. Ultimately, he felt as though even contemplating suicide would be an act that went unnoticed, a mere shadow in a world that prioritized the feelings of others over his own.
In that suffocating space, he desperately sought clarity, longing for a way out of the tangled web of expectations, neglect, and emotional chaos. The question hung heavy in the air: What was he supposed to do?
