More than a third of couples who got married in 2025 used artificial intelligence somewhere in their wedding planning process, according to The Knot Worldwide’s 2026 Real Weddings Study, and lab-grown diamonds have quietly become the majority choice for engagement rings. Two trends that would have sounded like science fiction a decade ago are now simply how a meaningful share of American couples are getting married.
The Real Weddings Study, one of the wedding industry’s largest annual surveys, tracks how couples actually planned and paid for their weddings the year prior, rather than relying on aspirational trend forecasts. Its 2026 edition, covering 2025 weddings, captured both shifts in enough detail to suggest they’re not passing novelties.
The backdrop matters here: the average U.S. wedding now costs roughly $34,000, according to the same Real Weddings Study, a figure that has climbed steadily even as couples marry later and juggle more competing financial priorities than past generations did at the same age. Against that price tag, both trends read less as gimmicks and more as two different ways couples are trying to keep a wedding meaningful without letting the budget spiral further out of reach.
AI moved from novelty to planning tool
Couples reported using AI tools across a range of planning tasks: generating mood boards and design concepts, drafting vows, building seating charts, researching vendors, and even fielding early-stage questions about budgeting and timeline logistics. What makes the adoption notable isn’t any single use case, it’s the breadth. Wedding planning has traditionally been an intensely manual, emotionally loaded process, and a third of couples folding AI into some part of it suggests the technology crossed from curiosity into utility fairly quickly.
The appeal is fairly practical. Wedding planning famously eats hundreds of hours across vendor research, guest coordination, and design decisions, much of it repetitive. AI tools that can generate a dozen mood board variations in minutes, or draft a first pass at a seating chart that a couple then adjusts, cut down on the most tedious parts of the process without necessarily changing what a wedding actually looks like on the day.
That time savings matters more than it might seem for a generation of couples who are often planning a wedding on top of full-time jobs, without the built-in extended family network that used to help absorb some of the coordination work. A seating chart that once took a couple several frustrated evenings to sort out, especially the diplomatic work of separating certain relatives, can now start from an AI-generated draft that accounts for stated preferences and conflicts, leaving the couple to fine-tune rather than build from scratch.
Lab-grown diamonds are no longer the alternative choice
The ring data tells a parallel story about how fast a once-alternative choice can become the default. Lab-grown diamonds, chemically identical to mined stones but produced in a lab rather than extracted from the earth, now account for the majority of diamond engagement ring purchases tracked in the study, a dramatic reversal from just a few years ago when they were treated as a budget-conscious niche option.
Price is the most obvious driver. Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 60 to 80% less than a mined diamond of comparable size and clarity, letting couples get a visually larger or higher-quality stone for the same budget, or the same size stone for meaningfully less money. For a generation getting married later, often while still carrying student debt or saving for a home down payment simultaneously, that price gap is difficult to ignore on a purchase that used to be expected to run two to three months of salary.
Sustainability and sourcing concerns play a role too, though the survey data suggests cost remains the more decisive factor for most couples. Lab-grown stones sidestep the ethical sourcing questions that have shadowed the traditional diamond industry for decades, an appeal that resonates with younger buyers even when it isn’t the primary reason for the switch.
Put together, the AI-planning and lab-grown-diamond numbers describe the same underlying shift from two different angles: a generation of couples optimizing where they can, automating the tedious parts of planning and choosing the more efficient version of a symbolic purchase, in order to protect the parts of a wedding that can’t be automated or substituted. The ceremony itself, the vows, the day with the people who matter, stays the same. How couples get there, and what they put on their hand to mark it, increasingly doesn’t look like their parents’ wedding at all.
