As a fresh new tenant in a shared living space, she (F26) had a lot to look forward to. The location was decent, and the rent was manageable. But soon, she discovered the surprising reality of her new home. It started with a few moths buzzing around, which she dismissed as a seasonal nuisance. After all, who hasn’t dealt with the occasional pest? However, as the weeks turned into months, the moths multiplied, and what was once a minor annoyance morphed into a full-blown infestation.

At first, she thought there might be something wrong with her. Was it her room? Did she have food hidden away? In an effort to prevent any potential issues, she made sure to dispose of every food item. Everything in her space was thrown out before the night ended, yet the problem only escalated. Finally, she caught a glimpse of her messy roommate (F20) when the door cracked open one day, and it hit her: this was where the moths were coming from. The roommate’s room was an absolute disaster zone—open chip bags, clothes strewn everywhere, and the unmistakable sight of moths fluttering out like a scene from a horror movie.
Despite the strong evidence pointing to her roommate, she tried to remain diplomatic. She repeatedly brought up the issue to their landlord, who only seemed to deflect the blame. “It’s moisture in your room,” he claimed, leaving her feeling frustrated and unheard. Her pleas for help fell on deaf ears, as he continuously made excuses rather than taking action. Maybe if he had just listened, they could have resolved the issue, but no. Instead, she found herself battling these pests alone.
Nighttime became a new arena for her struggle. During her midnight bathroom trips, she often found herself assaulted by baby moths. Upon returning to her room, she discovered baby moth larvae (yes, little worms) making their way into her clothes. That was the tipping point. She was disgusted and immediately cleaned her space, searching for ways to repel the intruders. Vinegar sprays, lavender candles, and peppermint oil became her allies, but the source of the problem remained elusive.
Adding to the chaos, her feline friend had been staying with family for the summer, leaving her without the small predator that could have chased the moths away. She thought it unfair that she had to depend on her cat to manage a problem that shouldn’t have existed at all. Meanwhile, the kitchen had turned into a battlefield, with moths swarming her every move. Cooking became a chore filled with anxiety, and inviting friends over felt impossible; who would want to endure an infestation?
It was clear that her roommate’s messy habits extended beyond just being disorganized. The roommate left her brush filled with hair in the shower, dirt and hair accumulated in various places, and she had a penchant for leaving unwrapped tampons in the garbage. The bathroom trash was filled with bloody items that had gone untouched for months. The stove and sink bore the scars of her roommate’s messy cooking, with remnants of food left to congeal and attract even more pests. She even had the audacity to throw ramen noodles in the bathroom sink, completely disregarding the shared space. And on top of it all, she let the cat out at night when she clearly knew better—just one more frustrating infraction in a long list.
Ultimately, she found herself at a crossroads. The living situation had become unbearable, and while she had considered moving out multiple times, finances kept her tethered to this unhealthy environment. She could only hope for change and a resolve from her roommate. But until that happened, she would continue to take matters into her own hands, fighting the infestation one moth at a time. In the back of her mind, she knew that saving to leave was her best option, but for now, this was her fight.
