This story takes place in La Pocatière, Quebec, a small town where many kids enjoyed the freedom of playing outside. For one young girl, however, a typical day at the playground turned into something much more unsettling.

At just nine years old, she had already navigated the complexities of her parents’ separation. Every weekend, she, along with her twin sister and older sister, would make the trip to spend time with their dad. It was a routine they were all accustomed to, and on this particular day, they found themselves at the playground of École Sacré-Cœur, the elementary school they had attended a few years prior.
The weather was warm, and laughter filled the air as the siblings joined their friends in a game they called “Fish.” The game shared similarities with hide-and-seek, but with a twist: the player who was “it” would keep their eyes closed and shout “Fish!” at various intervals, prompting the hiders to make noise. The thrill of hiding and seeking brought a sense of excitement, and the children were fully immersed in their game.
As the game progressed, the young girl wriggled her way beneath a skateboard ramp—a space where she felt cozy and secure. She curled up tight, hoping to remain hidden for as long as possible. But her sense of safety was about to be shattered.
While she was tucked away, a man in his 40s approached her. He crouched down to her eye level and reached out his hand, softly saying, “You can follow me.” At that moment, panic flickered through her mind. She was a shy child by nature, and instead of responding, she buried herself even deeper into her hiding spot.
Undeterred, the man reassured her, “You don’t have to be scared. You can come with me.” His tone was calm, almost enticing, and it sent a chill down her spine. Still, she chose silence. The world outside her hiding spot felt suddenly vast and threatening, and she clung to her position, hoping he would leave her alone.
After a few moments of lingering, the man stood up and slowly walked away, heading toward some trails behind the school that led to the area where the splash pad was located—a popular spot for children in the summer. He wore a black raincoat that billowed slightly as he walked, and both hands were shoved deep into his pockets. It felt like a scene straight out of a horror movie, where the mysterious figure fades into the distance.
Once she was sure he had gone, panic propelled her out from her hiding place. She sprinted to find her sisters, breathless and terrified, and voiced her desire to leave. The fun she had been having was now overshadowed by a disturbing encounter she struggled to comprehend.
Years later, she would still think about that day, replaying the scene in her mind as if it were a haunting memory etched in her memory. She remembered every detail of the man’s appearance, even the way he had knelt down to her level. It was a moment that had shifted her understanding of safety and trust, and she often wondered about the implications of that encounter. What had he wanted? What were his true intentions?
As she grew older, the memory lingered, mixed with a sense of unease. She began to question whether others in La Pocatière had similar experiences. Were there reports of suspicious individuals or even abductions that her parents never mentioned? All she wanted was to connect with others who might’ve faced the same chilling situation, to find solace in shared experiences and understanding.
Though she did not have answers, the encounter remained a significant part of her childhood narrative, shaping the way she viewed the world and the people in it. As she navigated through her teenage years, she often asked herself if it was just a moment of poor judgment from a lost soul or something more sinister.
Asking Reddit, she reached out to see if anyone else might know of similar stories or any details that could shed light on that day. The experience was a ghost that still loomed over her, one she hoped to dispel with understanding and maybe a little bit of closure.
