In a classic case of roommate drama, one group of friends found themselves in a particularly messy situation thanks to their less-than-responsible roommate and his feline companion. The saga began when the boyfriend of the main character, let’s call her Sarah, moved into a shared apartment with a guy named Pat, who had recently adopted a kitten. What seemed like a harmless addition to the household quickly turned into a litter box nightmare.

Pat’s approach to cat care left a lot to be desired. From the start, it became clear to Sarah and her boyfriend that the litter box was a low priority for Pat. He barely cleaned it, leading to a situation where the poor kitten had nowhere to stand and the floor was becoming a makeshift toilet. Sarah recounted one instance where she counted three weeks’ worth of accumulated waste before deciding enough was enough. “I was coming over every week just to help clean it up, and even my germaphobic boyfriend could see it was a health hazard,” she said, shaking her head at the absurdity of it all.

As if the situation couldn’t get any worse, Sarah was eventually forced to move her own cat into the apartment due to issues with her own roommates. This meant that not only was she dealing with her own cat’s care, but she also found herself stepping up to help with Pat’s kitten. “We basically helped raise her,” Sarah admitted. “Pat was gone a lot at night, and it felt like we were co-parenting this little furball.” Despite numerous discussions with Pat about the state of the litter box, the responsibility fell squarely on their shoulders. It was becoming increasingly clear that Pat wasn’t going to change his ways anytime soon.

As time went on, Sarah and her boyfriend decided they had reached their limit. After talking to Pat multiple times and getting nowhere, they finally made the tough decision to stop cleaning the litter for his cat. They would only handle their own pet’s mess, which was a clear departure from the unspoken agreement they had been operating under. Sarah explained, “It was obvious which poop belonged to who. My cat is older and would often use her own litter in a different part of the house. But still, Pat did nothing.” The passive-aggressive approach seemed the only way forward, yet it still didn’t spur Pat into action.

Then came the end of the lease, and the moment everyone had been silently dreading: Pat’s “moving out.” But instead of leaving the apartment in a decent state, he packed up his belongings (including the litter box, of course) and left a nasty surprise behind. “He literally left all the cat poop on the floor for us to deal with,” Sarah said, incredulously. “It was like he just took his stuff and decided we could handle the mess.”

What followed was the final chapter in this roommate saga — a mix of disbelief, anger, and a hell of a lot of cleaning. The roommates were left to face the aftermath of Pat’s negligence, staring at the remnants of what had once been a cute little kitten’s space but was now a disaster zone. It was a fitting end to a frustrating experience. “I honestly couldn’t believe he thought it was okay to leave like that,” Sarah said. “It was a mess both figuratively and literally.”

In a way, Pat’s actions encapsulated the complete lack of consideration he had shown throughout the entire time they lived together. For Sarah and her boyfriend, this was just one more reminder of why they had put up with so much for so long. “Some people just don’t get it,” she said, shaking her head. “It’s not just about you; there are other people and animals involved.”

As they cleaned up the remnants of Pat’s departure, Sarah and her boyfriend couldn’t help but feel a mix of relief and annoyance. The cat was gone, the mess was finally being dealt with, but the memories of their roommate saga would linger on. “We had so much patience for him, but this was the final straw. I guess we learned that not everyone is cut out to be a responsible pet owner.”
