It had been exactly two months since they had signed the lease, and time had quickly revealed that one of the roommates, let’s call her Sarah, had cleverly duped her roommate. During the tour of the apartment, Sarah had made a strong case for herself, emphasizing how she was tidy, paid her bills on time, and always cleaned up after herself. She projected an image of responsibility and cleanliness that was hard to resist. Fast forward to today, and that promise seemed to have vanished into thin air.

What had once felt like a win in finding a roommate had turned quite sour. Sarah’s futon, along with a collection of large packages and empty boxes, now occupied the hallway, blocking entryways. Her personal items littered the counter to the point where cooking became a logistical challenge, requiring her other roommate, Emily, to shuffle everything aside just to prepare a meal. There was ample storage space in the apartment, but Sarah had offered the excuse that she was “super short” and couldn’t put things away. Emily, who was also 5’3”, had suggested that Sarah invest in a stepping stool, but Sarah quickly dismissed the idea, claiming it wasn’t necessary for her to buy one.

What was even more puzzling was Sarah’s behavior concerning home life. She would spend entire days away from the apartment, seemingly busy from sunrise to sunset. It was as if she was purposely avoiding returning home, perhaps to escape the mess that was growing around them or to sidestep any responsibilities. Emily had noticed that on the rare occasion Sarah cooked dinner, she only cleaned the area she occupied, leaving the rest of the kitchen untouched. When she did sweep, it was only a small portion near her standing area, as Sarah justified it by saying she “didn’t move much.”

The trash situation was equally frustrating. The apartment had a dual trash bin system, but Sarah only ever took the trash out on the rarest of occasions, and when she did, she only replaced one of the trash bags. This led to a constant overflow, contributing to an increasingly unpleasant atmosphere in their home. To make matters worse, Sarah had helped herself to Emily’s remaining stash of dishwasher pods to wash her dishes and utensils during her move-in, but since then, she hadn’t bothered to empty the dishwasher once. This neglect led to a pile of dirty dishes accumulating in the sink, festering there for days.

Emily had also noticed a mounting financial issue. Sarah was now close to owing her nearly $200 for her share of the Wi-Fi and utility bills. Emily had reached out to her a week prior to the due date, hoping to remind Sarah about the upcoming payment, but her messages were met with absolute silence. Ignoring the impending bills was not the only problematic behavior Sarah exhibited; Emily had observed that packages from Amazon were delivered every single day. It was as though Sarah had prioritized online shopping over her financial obligations and household responsibilities.

There was a palpable tension in the air, which Emily found hard to ignore, especially given her work schedule. As she worked overnight, it seemed like Sarah planned her comings and goings with meticulous precision, waiting until Emily was gone before slipping into the apartment. This pattern left Emily feeling increasingly frustrated and taken for granted. She had tried to be understanding and gracious concerning the bills, but now her kindness felt exploited. “If you have a problem with your money, just talk to me,” Emily thought. Transparency was something she craved, but Sarah’s behavior indicated a complete lack of consideration for her roommate.

In the days that followed, Emily found herself increasingly irritated and conflicted. She had tried to address these issues amicably, but every attempt felt like it fell on deaf ears. The sense of being invisible in her own home was driving her to a breaking point, and the promise of a tidy, responsible roommate seemed more like a cruel joke.

As this saga continued, Emily weighed her options. Did she confront Sarah directly? Should she seek out a new living situation altogether? Whatever the decision, it was clear that the facade of a clean and responsible roommate was nothing but a dust-covered illusion.
