Two people walking down a path in the woods

This incident happened a few years ago to one of my friends, and it’s a story that still lingers in my mind. My friend, let’s call her Sara, used to walk from her school to the nearest metro station every evening with her classmate, Aditi. This was a routine they were both accustomed to, taking a narrow lane that connected their school to the station. By the time they left school, it was usually getting dark, and while there were a few street lamps scattered along the path, the light was often dim and the shadows loomed large.

One evening, as they were chatting and gossiping away, the atmosphere suddenly shifted. A middle-aged woman materialized in front of them out of nowhere. It was so abrupt that Sara couldn’t comprehend where she had come from. The woman stood a little behind a younger girl, who had a tomboy haircut and wore a kurti. The younger girl didn’t say a word, just watched silently as the older woman approached.

The woman spoke, but her voice was barely audible. At first, Sara couldn’t catch what she was saying, which was odd considering how close they were standing. After a moment of confusion, the woman repeated herself, “Can you hook my blouse? I can’t do it myself.”

That was when Sara’s instincts kicked in. Something felt off in the pit of her stomach. The woman’s sudden appearance, along with the odd request to help with her blouse, sent alarm bells ringing in her head. On the other hand, Aditi seemed to think the woman was genuine and was momentarily inclined to help her. She even took a step forward, ready to assist.

But then the woman added, “Not here… come to my house.” The second that phrase left her lips, everything clicked for Sara. The pieces of the puzzle fell into place, and she felt the urgency of the moment. Without a second thought, she quickly grabbed Aditi’s hand and practically yanked her away from the scene. They didn’t look back, their instincts guiding them toward the safety of the metro station.

Once they were on the train, the adrenaline coursed through them. The bizarre encounter hung in the air like fog. They recounted the details to each other, piecing together what had just happened and what could have unfolded had they followed the woman. When they got home, they recounted the incident to their parents, who were understandably alarmed. From that day on, Sara and Aditi were never allowed to walk that route alone again. Their parents insisted on accompanying them to and from the metro station, ensuring they would take a safer route.

Even now, looking back, Sara often wonders about that woman. Was she genuinely in need of help, or was she a predator looking to lure unsuspecting girls into a trap? The thought of what could have happened gnaws at her. To this day, it seems glaringly obvious that following a stranger to their house for something as trivial as hooking a blouse was a massive red flag.

It’s incredible how quickly an ordinary evening can take a dangerous turn. Just a casual walk home became a moment of instinctive survival. Sara’s gut feeling that night might have saved them both, and the experience left a lasting impression on them. They both know that trusting one’s instincts can sometimes steer you away from peril.

What do you think? Was the woman truly in distress, or was she up to something more sinister?
