It all started back in 2024 when a new coworker joined the small team at a local café. They had an average relationship; nothing too fancy, just the usual banter and small talk. But then, she noticed something that changed everything—a bed bug on the new hire’s bag. Panic struck her as she flicked the tiny creature away and pulled her aside to convey her concern.

At the time, she didn’t want to make a scene or point fingers, so she kindly warned her coworker about it. “Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I saw a bed bug on your bag. You might want to check your place for any signs,” she said, hoping this would help. The coworker seemed surprised but assured her, “I’ll take a look. My husband doesn’t want me discussing this issue, though.” That response was a bit odd, but she figured everyone has their own way of dealing with things.

Fast forward a few weeks, and the initial scare faded. She tried to shake off her anxiety, convincing herself that it was just a single straggler. However, after witnessing her coworker’s dismissive attitude, she couldn’t help but feel unsettled. Her gut feeling was nagging at her, especially since she had a history of anxiety that had been worsened by the whole affair. “Was I overreacting?” she wondered. “Maybe I was just being paranoid.”

The months dragged on. Life went on at the café, but the shadow of bed bugs lingered in the back of her mind. This struggle intensified when, during the summer of 2026, the coworker handed her a container filled with what looked like dead bugs. Trying to mask her horror, she pointed it out. “Um, there are bugs on this,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. To her shock, the coworker replied nonchalantly, “Oh, the bugs from the basement?”

Confusion and disbelief washed over her. “What do you mean?” she thought. It was as if the coworker was trivializing the severity of the situation. With that one casual comment, it felt like a shift in their entire dynamic. The warmth of their previous friendship had evaporated, replaced by a wary distance. She felt compelled to keep things civil, but her mind raced with confusion and frustration.

Recent events only exacerbated her concern. Just the other night, while closing the café, she spotted yet another bed bug scuttling across the floor. It was alive, and she wasted no time in squashing it. This was not just an isolated incident; it was a pattern she couldn’t ignore any longer. Anxiety gripped her as she worried about her own living space being at risk, and the mental toll was becoming overwhelming. She pulled her boss aside and explained the entire situation, from the bed bug on the bag back in 2024 to this recent sighting. They discussed potential responses, but she couldn’t help but feel like the issue had been neglected for too long.

As she anticipated her boss’s next steps, her mind raced with questions. Should she contact health officials? Was she even safe working in this environment? Her previous experiences dealing with German cockroaches in college dorms had conditioned her to be vigilant about pests, and this was all too familiar. “What if it spirals out of control?” she thought. The dread of dealing with an infestation again loomed over her.

A few days later, the café’s atmosphere shifted a bit. Perhaps her boss did take her concerns seriously. There was chatter among the staff about pest control measures being implemented. But still, the underlying tension remained. Knowing that her coworker had dismissed her initial warning and had seemingly been living in a state of denial made her uneasy. Questions buzzed in her head, and it felt like she was stuck in a bizarre episode of a reality show where everyone knew the truth except for her.

As she navigated these uncomfortable interactions, she was left wondering if her coworker was truly oblivious or if there was a deeper issue at play. After all, how could someone let such a serious problem go unchecked? The whole situation felt surreal, like a bad dream from which she couldn’t wake up.
