Sixteen-year-old Jason sat in the living room, his mind swirling with a storm of emotions as he listened to his father, Mark, and his father’s new wife, Rachel, talk about the hardships they had been facing in their marriage. The couple had gathered Jason and Rachel’s two children, Emma (15F) and Ryan (13M), to discuss the importance of battling through tough times and ensuring that they honored their marital vows. “You fight for love!” Rachel said passionately, her eyes shining with conviction. “You don’t just walk away when things get tough!”

But Jason couldn’t help but feel a burning anger rising in him. All he could think about was how Mark hadn’t fought for his marriage to Jason’s mother. When Jason was just ten years old, he had witnessed the unraveling of his parents’ relationship firsthand. He could still hear the echo of his father’s angry voice, declaring he didn’t want therapy or any attempts to salvage what once was. “I’ve made up my mind,” Mark had yelled. “You don’t need to know why!” Jason retreated to his room that day, shaken and confused, and eventually ended up in therapy to sort through the thoughts and emotions stirred up by that argument.
Now, sitting on the couch, Jason felt like he was listening to a stranger. Did Mark really expect him to believe that he had changed? That this time, he would fight for his partner? It felt hypocritical, and the hypocrisy dug under Jason’s skin. As his dad continued, Jason’s glare intensified. When the lecture finally came to an end, Mark approached Jason alone, noticing the look on his son’s face. “You’re not taking this seriously, are you?” he said, a hint of frustration creeping into his voice.
Jason snapped. “Why should I? You didn’t fight for Mom! You just gave up! And now you want me to listen to you about how important it is to battle for your marriage with Rachel?” The words spilled out before he could catch them, fueled by years of bottled-up emotions stirred by this very moment.
Mark’s face flushed with anger. “Things are different now. You’re too young to understand!”
“Well, I understand enough to know that you’re only fighting for this marriage,” Jason shot back. “You didn’t care about the last one!”
Mark insisted that he was trying to teach Jason a valuable lesson about relationships. “I want you to learn from me, man!”
Jason shook his head vehemently. “I learned from you all right, but not how you think. Look at your track record. Why should I take relationship advice from you?”
“This is immature,” Mark snapped, frustration boiling over. “You’re being petulant, Jason. I’m just trying to educate you.”
Jason felt the weight of those words. Educating him? What kind of education was this? It felt less like a lesson and more like an attempt to justify a relationship that didn’t seem built on the same principles that his father was now preaching. As Jason processed the exchange, he realized that the gap between what Mark said and what he had done was too wide for him to bridge.
As days passed, Jason found it increasingly difficult to shake off the resentment. Whenever Mark brought up their “important discussions on marriage,” Jason felt his heart race with anger. Did he honestly think he could erase the memory of their family falling apart with a few lectures? Meanwhile, Rachel’s children seemed to hang on every word that Mark said, believing fully in the message that commitment required hard work and perseverance. But for Jason, it felt more like a betrayal. A bitter reminder of what had been lost.
Each time they spoke, Jason’s mind flashed back to that tumultuous time six years ago, and he couldn’t help but wonder if his father ever realized the impact of his choices. How could Mark expect him to trust his advice now?
The tension simmered beneath the surface, creating chasms instead of bridges in their relationship. Jason wondered if his dad could ever truly understand why he felt the way he did, or if he would simply dismiss him again, as he had when they fought. Only time would tell.
