There’s a classic rule in workplaces: never let the tension from personal conflicts spill into professional relationships. But for one twenty-eight-year-old guy, things got out of hand in quite the unexpected way when he won a pair of highly coveted baseball tickets during a Christmas party at work.

Our protagonist, let’s call him Alex, was attending a typical holiday gathering hosted by his company. There were the usual items available in the raffle, from bottles of wine to kitchen gadgets that nobody really needed. But what caught the eye of many attendees were the two front-row tickets to a Toronto Blue Jays game, kindly donated by a vendor who split his season pass with his brother, creating an opportunity for some lucky soul to snag them.

When Alex’s name was drawn for those tickets, excitement bubbled up in him. He wasn’t a hardcore baseball fan, but he loved spending time with his mom, who was thrilled about the idea of going to a game. Good company, good seats, and a great day out? What could be better?

Alex’s co-worker, let’s refer to her as Brenda, had her eyes on those tickets the moment they were announced. Brenda, who was sixty and had been working at the company for a long time, sensed a chance she couldn’t let slip away. From the get-go, she approached Alex with her pleas to transfer the tickets to her, reminding him that he didn’t even watch baseball and couldn’t drive to the stadium. It felt strange to Alex; he had just won them fair and square. Why should he give them away just because someone else wanted them more?

As the weeks turned into months, Brenda became increasingly persistent. She threw in everything from guilt trips to comparisons of their situations, claiming she would “appreciate” the tickets more than he would, and that she had friends to take. Alex, however, stood his ground. He had made plans with his mom, and he wasn’t about to let those tickets go.

Things escalated recently when Brenda attempted to contact the vendor directly, claiming she now owned the tickets. The vendor promptly informed her that Alex had already gotten the tickets and directed her back to him. It was a bold move on her part, and it didn’t sit well with Alex. After all, he had already taken the tickets and was counting down the days until the game.

In a moment fueled by frustration, Alex found himself facing Brenda in the office, where she launched into another rant about how he should just give the tickets to her. Exhausted by the pressure, Alex finally snapped. He firmly told her, “Over my dead body.” It wasn’t his proudest moment, but years of relentless pressure had drained his patience. Brenda stormed off, clearly taken aback, but Alex felt a sense of relief in standing his ground.

However, relief was short-lived. Later, one of his friends from the factory floor remarked that maybe Alex could have handled the situation better. This comment lingered in his mind, making him question whether he should have approached the conversation differently. Yet, with everything that had transpired, it was hard for him to feel guilty; he had won the tickets fair and square, after all.

Adding a twist to the scenario, it turned out Brenda was quite friendly with the HR representative at their company. Alex began to worry about the potential repercussions of his outburst and whether it would affect his standing in the workplace. As the tension lingered, he started to feel the weight of the situation; finding a new job became a thought that crossed his mind more often than he liked.

In the end, Alex was left questioning whether he was in the wrong for not giving up his tickets. Was standing up for what he rightfully won worth the stress he was facing? That feeling of anxiety bubbled up inside him as he prepared for what should have been an exciting game with his mom.
