A few years ago, a student found herself grouped with a couple of teammates for a significant project. From the beginning, the team chemistry was off. These teammates were what one might refer to as “vegetarian idealists.” While the student had no issue with their dietary choices or eco-conscious attitudes, their interactions began to feel somewhat preachy. Comments like, “I could never be okay with having a ham sandwich,” and “You should have cycled today instead of driving,” began to grate on her nerves.

The tension escalated when the vegetarian duo decided they wanted to visit several farms to discuss sustainable agriculture. The student thought this was an unnecessary detour in their research—a complicated endeavor that would require them to sacrifice valuable project time for what felt like an extended field trip. She explained that she was already contributing significantly to the workload and felt that their planned excursions wouldn’t add much value to the final report. To their credit, the teammates were understanding, and they went off to visit the farms for three full days.
While they enjoyed their little adventure, the student stayed behind and handled the bulk of the actual research. By the time her teammates returned, their farm visits had amounted to little more than footnotes in the report. She didn’t let it get to her, though; she was relieved to see the end of the project nearing. But, even when it was over, the entire experience lingered in her mind.
As they wrapped up, the team decided to host a potluck, where everyone would bring a dish they had made at home. This is where the student’s plan began to unfold. She had a secret weapon: a killer brownie recipe. These brownies were incredibly moist and flavorful—no other brownie she had tasted could compete. With her classmates raving about their deliciousness by the end of the potluck, it was clear her baking had been a hit.
When her teammates, the vegetarian idealists, clamored for the recipe, she simply smiled and promised to send it later. Inside, however, a little mischievous part of her didn’t want to share it at all. She started coming up with excuses: “Oh, I forgot; I’ll send it tonight,” or “I’ll get that to you tomorrow!” And as the days and weeks passed, she kept ignoring their requests.
Eventually, the project concluded successfully, and they all parted ways. But even years later, her teammates would occasionally reach out, asking for that elusive brownie recipe. Each time, the student felt a sense of satisfaction knowing that they were probably never going to taste brownies as good as hers again. She relished the petty victory, taking comfort in the knowledge that the minor annoyances she had endured were being repaid in the best way possible—by withholding the secret to her exceptional brownies.
In her mind, it was a fitting punishment for their nagging. After all, if they had been less preachy and more collaborative, who knows? Maybe she would have happily shared her recipe. But for now, they could keep asking—she enjoyed the sweet silence that came with their unanswered messages.
