A young woman, let’s call her Sarah, had recently started working at a Walmart in her hometown. It was one of those bustling supercenters where the days blended together, filled with scanning groceries and restocking shelves. Like many of her colleagues, she was just trying to make some money while keeping things low-key. However, what Sarah thought would be a typical job became anything but that when she found a sticky note on her car window one day after her shift.

Busy road traffic passes a walmart store.

The note simply read, “Take care beautiful (:”, and it was accompanied by a smiley face. Sarah initially brushed it off as a harmless prank. After all, it could have been a silly joke from a coworker trying to lighten the mood. But when she discovered a second note days later that said, “Bye, have a nice weekend (:”, her heart raced. This time, unease crept in. Who was leaving these notes? And why? The ambiguity transformed what could have been a cute gesture into something that felt increasingly invasive.

Feeling a mix of confusion and unease, Sarah shared her story with a couple of her close friends at work. One coworker, Mia, was quick to advise her to take the matter seriously. “You should make a police report,” Mia suggested. “They could check the cameras, and at least you’d know who it is.” While Sarah appreciated the concern, part of her hesitated. She wondered if involving the police for what could be a harmless joke was overreacting.

“But what if it’s just a coworker messing with me?” Sarah pondered. She thought about the employees she interacted with daily, weighing the odds. Could it be someone from her department trying to flirt, or was it just a prank gone too far? Her gut told her that it was probably innocent, but paranoia started to creep in as she replayed the moments from work in her head. What if it was someone more sinister? The small, seemingly innocent notes began to take on a troubling tone in her mind.

As the days passed, Sarah couldn’t shake off the lingering feeling of discomfort. She began to observe her surroundings more acutely than usual. The parking lot, once a familiar routine, now felt eerie. She started paying attention to the faces of her coworkers, trying to discern who might be playful enough to leave those notes. Was it Jake, the jokester? Or could it be Amanda, who often seemed a little too interested in her life? The uncertainty gnawed at her, and she felt an unsettling mix of curiosity and apprehension.

One afternoon, while finding a moment of solace in the break room, Sarah confided in another colleague, Lucas. “I want to find out who’s doing this, but I don’t want to make a scene.” She explained the notes and the advice from Mia. Lucas listened intently before responding, “You know, I get that it could be a joke, but it’s okay to protect yourself. If it makes you feel uncomfortable, you should report it.” His straightforward perspective seemed to resonate with her, pushing her to contemplate the steps she should take next.

Ultimately, Sarah decided to speak with a manager about the situation instead of going directly to the police. After recounting the notes and her feelings, her manager agreed that they should review the security footage in the parking lot for her safety. “We’ll figure this out,” he assured her, which left Sarah feeling a little more secure but also filled with anticipation and anxiety. Who would it turn out to be? A friendly coworker, or someone she’d never suspect?

As she prepared for another day at work, Sarah’s mind raced with countless possibilities. The thought of uncovering the identity behind the notes both intrigued and terrified her. She didn’t want to be that person who made waves, yet she recognized her discomfort was valid. Maybe the notes were meant to be sweet, or maybe they were a warning sign. Whatever it was, the mystery loomed over her and created a blend of anxiety and curiosity she couldn’t shake off.

In the end, Sarah had to confront the reality of the situation. Whether it led to laughter in the breakroom or more serious implications, she knew she had a choice to make—one that balanced her instinct to seek the truth against her desire for a peaceful workplace.
