Sam and his wife had been happily married for eight years, sharing not just their lives but also their dreams and aspirations. He had always been a sociable person, someone who could strike up a conversation with anyone, including the lamp in their living room if given the chance. However, it was one fateful drive that would trigger a wave of uncertainty in his wife’s mind.

While on the road, she borrowed his phone for a quick task, and a message from a coworker named Ann popped up on the screen. Curiosity got the better of her, and she clicked on the message to discover an extensive thread that raised red flags. It was filled with “I’m leaving, see you (day of next shift)” texts from Sam to Ann, followed by her responses which were often cheerful and included a few casual exchanges about personal matters. Sam’s texts weren’t unusual in their frequency, given his easygoing nature, but the context of the messages—their consistent farewells—felt oddly intimate.

Initially, she brushed it off, thinking it might just be workplace banter, but the content began to nag at her. Sam had a playful personality, and he often enjoyed inside jokes with his colleagues. Yet, the fact that Ann responded with cheerful emojis and sometimes asked if he had left yet seemed to indicate a level of connection that felt more personal than professional. What caught her attention even more was when he asked Ann about her favorite Taylor Swift album. It seemed inconsequential, but it made her wonder if there was more behind those casual interactions. When she questioned Sam about it, he dismissed her concerns, saying he was just curious and wanted to include Ann in a conversation that everyone else was having.

When pressed about the constant “I’m leaving” messages, Sam explained that it had originated as a joke—he had left the room once without telling her, and Ann had joked that it stressed her out. So, it became a running gag. Sam insisted that if she looked back at their messages, she would see the humor in it. “It’s just something I do to reassure her,” he said. However, when she spoke to a colleague, they mentioned how they’d sometimes joke at work that if anyone wondered where Sam was, all they had to do was look for Ann. That was when the pit in her stomach began to grow.

His coworker offered more insight, mentioning how Sam often helped Ann during her moments of anxiety by placing his hands on her shoulders, helping her breathe through panic attacks. This gesture felt too intimate to her, especially since she knew he offered the same comfort to her during her own anxiety episodes. When she raised the question about whether there were any romantic feelings involved, Sam laughed it off, claiming he was like a big brother to Ann. His non-defensive tone reassured her somewhat, yet the entire situation still sat heavily on her mind.

Adding to her unease were some minor details that kept surfacing. For instance, a colleague mentioned that Sam often brought protein bars for Ann at work. The fact that he hadn’t mentioned this simple act in their conversations added to the cloud of uncertainty. Plus, there was the incident at a practice party where Ann got too drunk and ended up leaving with a caterer, and Sam had tried to intervene. This seemed natural—he was protective of friends—but it made her pause. Was he being a good coworker or was there something deeper at play? And then came the revelation that people were calling them “Cosmo and Wanda.” She had no clue what that nickname meant, but it left her feeling more confused than ever.

She felt torn between trusting her husband and the gnawing feeling of doubt that was taking root in her mind. Was she being irrational? Was he just a genuinely nice guy trying to help a coworker in need? As she balanced her feelings of unease against their solid relationship, she knew she needed an outside perspective.

As she returned to her regular life—one that included their kid and all the normal ups and downs of married life—she grappled with the reality of her suspicions. She wanted to trust Sam, but the intimate gestures and casual banter with Ann left her feeling conflicted. For the first time in their marriage, doubt lingered like a shadow, and she was left contemplating the boundaries of friendship and familiarity in the workplace.
