In the whirlwind of freshman year, life in the dorms can be a blend of excitement and unexpected drama. For one student, let’s call him Jake (18m), his experience in the communal showers took a turn he never anticipated. On one rainy Tuesday, after a long day of classes, Jake stepped into the shared shower in his dorm. Like many college students, he was used to the less-than-ideal conditions of dorm life—the noise, the mess, and yes, even the hair left behind by fellow residents.

After rinsing off, Jake was feeling relaxed until he stepped out of the shower, towel draped over one shoulder, and encountered another student, whom we’ll refer to as Mark. Mark was visibly upset, pointing and gesturing at the floor of the shower. “Ugh, this is disgusting!” he exclaimed, glaring at the remnants of hair that had, like it or not, accumulated in the shared space.

“Seriously, it’s gross. I’m so tired of guys just leaving their hair everywhere. Do you know how annoying it is?” Mark continued, his voice rising slightly as if he were addressing an assembly rather than just Jake, who was standing there in a towel, caught off guard.

At this point, Jake’s initial reaction was disbelief. Was this guy seriously calling him out for hair that could have belonged to anyone in the dorm? “Dude, chill out,” Jake replied, rolling his eyes. “It’s a shared shower. It’s going to be messy. Just mind your business and pick a different shower.”

Jake felt justified in his response. After all, there were multiple shower stalls available, and anyone complaining about hair had to be aware that they were in a communal living situation, right? “There are, like, six showers in this place,” he argued. “If you think this one’s dirty, go use one of the others.”

But Mark was not having it. He shot back, “All of them are gross! Can’t you just clean up after yourself?” Clearly, the confrontation was escalating, and Jake was starting to feel annoyed. Why was Mark singling him out? It felt absurd to be held accountable for hair that could easily have come from any one of their dorm mates.

After a moment of awkward silence, marked by the sound of dripping water and the distant chatter of other students outside the restroom, Jake decided to turn away from the confrontation. Why waste time arguing with someone who seemed overly invested in enforcing cleanliness in a place that was, by design, a bit grimy? He quickly hushed himself and left the shower area, shaking his head at the absurdity of the situation.

The encounter left Jake a bit rattled. Was he in the wrong for brushing off Mark’s outburst, or was Mark just taking his frustrations out on the nearest person? It was such a trivial issue in the grand scheme of things, yet Jake couldn’t help but wonder if he should have been more accommodating. He remembered seeing other guys in the dorm shrugging off the same issue—hair everywhere, grimy floors, and all—and never engaging in a public showdown over it.

In a strange way, the incident stuck with him for the rest of the day. He found himself replaying it in his head, questioning whether he should have actually engaged with Mark or if he did the right thing by telling him to mind his own business. Did Mark have the right to complain about something so minor in a shared living space, or was Jake justified in rolling his eyes and moving on?

The next day, Jake decided to bring it up with a couple of friends over lunch, curious about their takes on it. “Would you guys have done something different?” he asked, recounting the whole story, hair in the shower and all. To his relief, his friends rolled their eyes and laughed, many echoing sentiments about the commonality of shared living spaces and the expectation of messiness in dorm life. Most seemed to agree that Mark had overreacted and that it was just part of the experience. “Bro, it’s a dorm shower! You can’t expect it to be spotless,” one friend added.

As the conversation carried on, Jake felt a weight lift off his shoulders. It turned out he wasn’t alone in his feelings about the absurdity of the entire incident. It was just one of those quirks of dorm life that he would probably look back on and chuckle about—eventually.

But as he pondered the situation, he couldn’t help but wonder if anyone else would have rolled their eyes too, or if he had inadvertently provoked more drama than necessary.
