Earlier that week, he’d shown the regular teacher how he could use the device as a programmable remote control for the TV. Ms. Thumper, who was settling into her chair, looked confused as the screen went black. She immediately got up to turn it back on. But as soon as she sat back down, Jake turned it off again. The cycle repeated: on, off, on, off, with Jake timing it just right so that he was always a step ahead.
Each time she reached for the power button, Jake made the TV go right back off, causing her to stand up in frustration. “What is wrong with this TV?” she muttered to herself, growing increasingly exasperated. The students laughed quietly at the escalating situation, while Ms. Thumper became more and more determined to fix the ‘broken’ television.
The game continued until she finally threw her hands in the air and declared that the TV must be damaged, giving up on her futile attempts to control the classroom. Relieved, she allowed the students to finally sit and work on whatever they wanted for the remainder of the class.
The next day, Jake decided it was time to come clean. He approached the regular teacher during lunch and explained what had happened, hoping she wouldn’t think her television had actually malfunctioned due to some electrical issues. Much to his surprise, she found the entire situation amusing, though she also deemed Jake’s actions mischievous. In the end, she slapped him with a three-day lunch detention, which he didn’t mind at all. As far as he was concerned, it was a small price to pay for his slice of revenge.
And that was how Jake, a teenager navigating impending fatherhood, outsmarted a substitute teacher who dared to impose her beliefs on him. The episode became something of a legend among his peers, a story they’d come to share as they reminisced about their wild high school days.
