people sitting on dining table

This morning, a man found himself enjoying a hearty full English breakfast at a café located within a local garden centre. He was there with his wife and kids, indulging in good food and family time, when suddenly, his in-laws made a surprise appearance. Unbeknownst to them, they all had the same idea. The family decided to pull tables together, creating a cozy gathering filled with laughter and chatter.

For context, this café was pet-friendly, allowing dogs in designated areas equipped with patio doors and outdoor tables. Inside, the last row of tables was also open to dogs, particularly in inclement weather. Typically, the ambiance included the occasional bark or the sound of chains rattling, but everyone in the café seemed to mind their own business and enjoy their meals—until today.

As the man was lifting a forkful of bacon and hash brown to his mouth, a man in his late thirties walked by with a dog in tow. Spotting someone else he knew, the dog owner stopped right next to the family’s table to chat, practically leaning onto it. The dog’s eager snout was right there, searching for food scraps. While the man believed in being considerate in public, the situation was starting to get under his skin. But that wasn’t the worst part.

Just as he was about to take a bite, an unmistakable smell wafted through the air. Looking up, he suddenly found himself face-to-face—almost literally—with a large, loosely tied bag of dog excrement that was swinging inches from his head. The bag seemed to have a few unfortunate smudges on the outside, which only made things worse. As someone who had handled baby diapers and vomit without batting an eye, he thought he’d have a strong constitution, but this was a step too far. Having dog poop so close to his breakfast was entirely unacceptable.

Unable to contain himself, he shouted“Hey!” while instinctively dodging the swinging bag. The dog owner jumped back in surprise. Everyone else in the café turned to watch the unfolding drama—the staff, other customers, and other dog owners—left their meals and conversations behind, all curious about what was happening.

With the offensive bag now out of his face, the man stood up and confronted the dog owner directly. “Get that away from me and out of the café before you end up eating it yourself!” he exclaimed, emphasizing how disgusting and unhygienic the situation was. The dog owner mumbled an apology, claiming he forgot he was holding it, and hurriedly exited the café.

Feeling thoroughly put off his food, the man decided it was best to leave, while his in-laws remained to finish their breakfast. Back at home, however, the man’s wife received a call from her mother shortly thereafter. It turned out that the man the dog owner had been chatting with was acquainted with his in-laws. They reported that while they agreed with the man’s stance on the matter, some others felt that making such a scene was a bit unnecessary. The other dog owners reportedly suggested that everyone should understand dogs have to do their business and need cleaning up after.

In the aftermath of the encounter, the man couldn’t help but feel conflicted. He stood by his belief that nobody should have to endure foul smells or the sight of dog poop while trying to enjoy a meal. But it also struck him that perhaps the dog owner wasn’t the only one who needed to be mindful in public spaces. Was he overreacting? A little dramatic? Or was it completely justified to react that way?
