A woman sitting on a couch in front of a window

This happened a few weeks ago and it involved a young woman, a 20-year-old named Sarah, who had gone out to celebrate her birthday. Sarah has had a rough life; she has battled mental health issues and has struggled with alcohol, especially when she’s vulnerable. On the night of her birthday, she was out with a friend and her friend’s boyfriend in a coastal town, having what was supposed to be a fun night. However, as the night wore on, things took a turn for the worse.

After her friend briefly left her alone on a bench, Sarah went missing. Her friend, who was preoccupied with their intoxicated boyfriend, didn’t notice that Sarah had vanished until they were ready to leave. With panic setting in, they reached out to Sarah’s family for help. Her older sister, who had always been on high alert when it came to Sarah’s safety, received the call from their mother around 11:30 PM. Instantly, she felt a pit in her stomach. It was becoming a familiar pattern: Sarah needed rescuing again.

Without hesitation, Sarah’s sister and her husband jumped in their car and made the hour-long drive to the coastal town. They were determined to find her. Using the location-sharing feature on Sarah’s phone, they were able to track her movements as she seemed to ride around on a bus. Eventually, the tracking stopped at a certain address—15 Nonamestreet. Fearing the worst, they set off to investigate.

Once at the train station, they connected with a well-meaning friend of Sarah’s, who had also been searching for her. Although he was intoxicated, he did manage to provide helpful information. Crucially, they learned from a bus driver that a middle-aged man had paid for Sarah’s fare when she couldn’t. He had gotten her to sit with him, and when she didn’t get off at the expected stop, alarm bells really began to ring.

They decided to head to the address where Sarah’s phone had last pinged. It was a block of flats, dark and uninviting. The tension was palpable as they searched for clues. Suddenly, Sarah’s sister had an idea. If the man was still up, maybe the lights in his flat would be on. They scanned the windows, and then they saw her. There was Sarah, sitting next to the middle-aged man. Not fully dressed and clearly in a compromised state. Time froze. They shouted for Sarah to come to the window, and when she noticed them, she seemed startled. And then, just like that, the blinds snapped shut.

A mix of panic and anger surged through them. They called the police, who were generally unhelpful, but one dispatcher finally agreed to send someone to check it out. Meanwhile, concerned neighbours started to confront them about the situation. One of the neighbours pulled Sarah’s sister aside and whispered warnings about the man’s past behavior, saying he had a reputation for being “sexually pushy.” That only heightened their urgency.

After what felt like an eternity, Sarah finally emerged from the flat, beer in hand, clearly still under the influence. She insisted that the man had only helped her, offering her water and a place to stay. It was evident she was completely oblivious to the danger she had been in. The group managed to convince her to leave the scene, but the reality of what had almost happened hung over them like a dark cloud.

In the aftermath, it took hours of gentle conversations for Sarah to realize how lucky she had been. They drilled down into the facts, pointing out that the man could have taken her anywhere else—back to the train station, for instance—but instead had decided to take her to his flat. The ordeal was a stark reminder of how quickly things could escalate when someone is vulnerable. Sarah’s sister felt an overwhelming mix of relief and frustration—the police had been slow to act, but they had managed to rescue Sarah, thanks to a concerned bus driver and their relentless pursuit.

Although there were no physical injuries, the emotional scars of the night would linger. It was a sobering reminder of the risks that came with being young, drunk, and alone in a world that isn’t always kind. But they were just grateful that Sarah was safe, and that they had acted just in time.
