SONIC’s new fall drink lineup skips pumpkin spice entirely, and the reason is refreshingly literal: it’s still hot outside. The chain’s official “Hotumn” lineup launched August 24, 2026, bringing four iced dirty-soda flavors — Cherry Pie made with Coke, Blueberry Pie made with Dr Pepper, Harvest Berry made with Sprite, and Cranberry Orchard Sweet Tea — to participating locations and the SONIC App. Every other major fall menu right now is racing toward warm spiced lattes. SONIC went cold on purpose, betting that most of the country isn’t ready to trade ice for steam just because the calendar flipped to September.
The Logic Behind Going Cold
“SONIC has been serving up fun, customizable drinks long before dirty sodas became a trend,” said Ryan Dickerson, SONIC’s Chief Marketing Officer, in the company’s own launch announcement. “In many parts of the country, it’s still way too hot for a steaming latte.” That’s not a throwaway line — it’s the entire strategy. Fall menus have trained customers to expect pumpkin spice and cinnamon by early September regardless of the actual weather, and trade coverage of the launch has noted that SONIC is explicitly positioning Hotumn as the fall option for people who want the seasonal flavors without giving up their iced drink habit through the last weeks of real summer heat.
Four Flavors, Zero Pumpkin
The lineup leans into fruit and dessert flavors instead of spice. Cherry Pie made with Coke and Blueberry Pie made with Dr Pepper both borrow from SONIC’s dirty-soda formula — real fruit flavoring stirred into a classic fountain base over crushed ice — while Harvest Berry made with Sprite and Cranberry Orchard Sweet Tea lean tarter and lighter. None of the four drinks touch pumpkin, cinnamon, or nutmeg, which puts SONIC at odds with nearly every quick-service chain currently rolling out a fall menu built around those exact three ingredients.
Betting Against the Season, Not Against Fall
This isn’t SONIC opting out of autumn marketing — it’s SONIC betting that the actual weather in most of the country still calls for ice through September and into October. Every other fall drink menu is racing toward the same warm, spiced flavor profile at the same time, which means SONIC’s iced lineup stands out mostly by not competing on those terms at all. The chain has built its identity for decades around customizable drinks served over ice regardless of season, so Hotumn reads less like a seasonal pivot and more like SONIC applying its existing format to flavors that happen to be tied to fall on the calendar.
How This Plays Against the Rest of the Fall Menu Race
Quick-service chains typically treat the first hint of September as a green light to roll out pumpkin, cinnamon, and maple flavors across coffee, baked goods, and seasonal specials, often regardless of the actual regional temperature. That approach works well in states already seeing cooler mornings, and less well in the parts of the South and Southwest still running highs in the 90s deep into October. By keeping its fall lineup entirely cold, SONIC is effectively opting out of that geographic mismatch, betting that customers in warmer climates will reach for a fall-flavored iced drink over a hot one they have no interest in ordering until the temperature actually drops.
