Checked bags don’t always show up when you do. Delays, misconnections, and the occasional lost bag are rare but common enough that airlines have entire departments dedicated to reuniting travelers with luggage that took a different route. Even when everything goes right, your suitcase might not reach the hotel for hours after you do.
These nine items are worth pulling into a carry-on or personal item instead, just in case your checked bag takes the scenic route.
Prescription Medication
Never pack your only supply of medication in a checked bag. Keep at least enough for the full trip, plus a buffer for delays, in your carry-on in original labeled containers, both for your own access and to make security screening straightforward.
A Full Change of Clothes
If your suitcase gets delayed a day, you’ll be glad to have at least one clean outfit and a set of undergarments in your carry-on rather than wearing travel clothes to a meeting or dinner reservation.
Toiletries You Can’t Easily Replace
Contact lens solution, specific prescription creams, or anything you can’t just grab at a drugstore should travel with you, not in the bag that might not arrive on schedule.
Phone Chargers and Cables
A dead phone with no way to charge it is one of the more avoidable travel headaches. Keep at least a charging cable in your personal item at all times.
Important Documents and Confirmations
Hotel confirmations, rental car paperwork, and any printed itinerary details should stay with you. If your suitcase is delayed, you still need to know where you’re going and how to get there.
A Copy of Your ID and Insurance Information
Keeping a photo or physical copy of your ID and travel insurance details separate from your checked bag means you’re not stuck if the bag disappears entirely for a stretch.
Valuables and Jewelry
Anything expensive or sentimental belongs on your person or in a carry-on, not in a suitcase that could be delayed, misrouted, or in rare cases, opened and rifled through during handling.
Glasses or Contacts
If you rely on corrective lenses, pack a spare pair or your contacts and solution in your carry-on. Waiting on a delayed bag is much worse when you also can’t see clearly.
Anything You Need Within the First Few Hours
Think through what you’ll actually do in the first few hours after landing, whether it’s a swimsuit for a same-day excursion or workout clothes for an early class, and keep those specific items out of the checked bag entirely.
