The video from @lashay.greenwood carries a single caption: “Telling our family & friends why we decided not to get married on this day.” White text at the top of the frame repeats it for the whole clip: “Telling Our Family & Friends We Decided Not To Get Married.” The audio is listed as “Original audio,” and the explanation the caption promises is spoken, not written on screen.

What the video shows is a wedding that has already reached the ceremony. The setting is outdoors, on a stone patio at the edge of a stand of tall pines under a bright blue sky with white clouds, with rows of white folding chairs and, at the front, a white floral arch. A bride in a long white gown with a train and a groom in a cream jacket and olive green pants stand at the front, beside a man in a dark suit. In the first seconds the bride and groom are close together near the arch.

From there the camera, held by hand, pans away from the couple and across the guests. Many wear sage green, others wear pink, and a few have black umbrellas open against the sun. The shots return to the couple standing alone at the front, with the guests facing them.

The U.S. government’s USAGov site draws the legal line plainly: “A marriage license legally allows you to marry,” and a marriage certificate “proves you got married.” USAGov says licenses and records come from the state where the marriage takes place, and that a license typically expires within 30 days to a year, depending on the state that issued it.

For anyone planning a wedding or a ceremony on a different day from the legal marriage, check the license rules in the state where the ceremony will take place, find out how long a license stays valid, and decide ahead of time which day carries the legal marriage and which carries the party.
