The TikTok from @itshungryamber is a 140 second mukbang shot against a bright purple backdrop, and it begins with the rules of the trend. “Doing the lunch in my city trend today,” a woman with a dark bob and a white streak in her bangs says. “To do this trend, you just go to your search bar, type in lunch in my city plus your city, and then whatever video pops up first is what you get for lunch.” She says her result was a barbecue restaurant in Evans, Georgia. The caption gives the same place a 10 out of 10 and tags the video with burger, barbecue and mukbang.
In front of her is a table packed edge to edge: a burger, a pile of sweet potato fries, a bowl of collard greens, a tub of macaroni and cheese, smoked chicken, sausage links, brisket and a handful of side cups. A small inset of the restaurant’s food photo flashes at the top. She starts with the burger. “This is their jalapeno popper burger,” she says, and after a bite and a long pause, “That is absolutely amazing. Wow. That is insanely good. 10 out of 10.”
Then she moves through the sides at speed. She calls the collard greens “good” and says the macaroni and cheese has seasoning in it and “it’s actually pretty good.” The jalapeno cheddar link is “nice and spicy,” and she likes it. Her next stop is birria with a cup of broth for dipping, which she describes as having a really good flavor, and she scores it 9 out of 10.
The meat course is where the spread gets serious. “Smoked chicken with a white barbecue sauce,” she says. “That’s actually pretty good. You can tell that it’s smoked because the flavor is embedded in the chicken.” Then she picks up a melt sandwich made with brisket, provolone and caramelized onions, and says, “That is cooked perfectly.” She also dips her sweet potato fries in a creamy white sauce, and then she goes back to the burger for another bite.
The finale is dessert. “I had to get dessert because I love banana pudding,” she says. “It smells amazing. This bite is going to be phenomenal.” After all the savory food, she calls it “the best banana pudding I’ve ever had,” says it tastes fresh, and notes the vanilla wafers on the bottom. The score is her biggest of the video: “100 out of 10.” She ends with a direct recommendation, “If you’re in the Evans, Georgia area, I highly recommend.”
A table this big raises a leftovers question, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service answers it on its leftovers page. The agency says to refrigerate leftovers within two hours, or within one hour when the air is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and to divide large amounts into shallow containers so they cool quickly. Leftovers keep about three to four days in the refrigerator, and they should be reheated to 165 degrees, checked with a food thermometer.
