A plate of eggs, bread and sausage served for a hearty country breakfast.

Two Brits on a road trip across America kept hearing the same advice: you have to go to Cracker Barrel. That is the story of the duo behind the YouTube channel Carly and Jack. Everyone kept telling them to go, so they finally did.

A plate of eggs, bread and sausage served for a hearty country breakfast.

Their question going in was a fair one. Is Cracker Barrel a one and done, or an American classic you keep coming back for? By the end of their meal, they had an answer, and it came with some very happy faces.

First Impressions: Rocking Chairs and Christmas in September

The pair describe what they were expecting before they arrived: rocking chairs, a wooden porch, the cutest old-fashioned country store, and of course the food. They visited in September, after 11 in the morning, so they could order from both the breakfast and lunch menus.

The first thing that caught their eye inside was the Christmas decorations already on display in the store, in September. If you have ever walked into Cracker Barrel, you know that is not a surprise, but for two first-timers it was a fun welcome.

What They Ordered

They went for a spread. First up was the fresh baked mini cinnamon roll skillet, which they describe as filled with rich cream cheese icing and, as one of them put it, “literally 8.49 dollars” and sharable. They added southern fried chicken with gravy, cornbread, three sides, and caramel lattes. They also considered the meatloaf, but they did not end up ordering it.

Neither of the pair behind Carly and Jack had ever had cornbread before. Their verdict was friendly: they said they are fans, and it was good plain and good with butter.

Their server asked a smart question: “Are you sharing?” And when the pair were raving about the cinnamon skillet, the server offered a tip of the trade, telling them that if they loved it, they would love the beignets.

The Beignets That Almost Made Them Cry

This is the moment the whole visit turns. After trying the beignets, one of the pair says they are “insane” and compares them to “warm fireworks in your mouth.” Then comes the line that gave this story its heart: “It’s food that makes you want to cry.” They add that they actually had genuine tears in their eyes, because the beignets tasted like “a little bit of home.”

That is a big reaction for a plate of fried dough, and it says something about comfort food. Great comfort food is not always about being fancy. It is about reminding you of a place and a feeling, even when you are thousands of miles from your own kitchen.

The Dumplings and the Straight Ten

The next stop on the table was the Mama’s breakfast, along with dumplings and mac and cheese. The reaction was a long “wow” followed by the words “this is a straight up 10.” One of them said they would choose it over pancakes “100 percent,” which is quite a statement from a pair who had never been there before.

Decor, Rocking Chairs and the Country Store

The two also enjoyed the look of the restaurant, which they called “proper American.” Along the walls were sporting equipment, rifles, baseballs and snowshoes. Outside, the rocking chairs lined the porch, and they joked about sitting there “to rock the food down.”

Then it was on to the shop. They spotted coffee and pancake candles, a buy one get one 50 percent off deal on pancake mix and syrups, and more Christmas decor. They also made a point of mentioning their luggage weight limits, which any traveler flying home with souvenirs will appreciate.

A sign on the premises says the Old Country Store has aimed to please every guest since it first opened in 1969.

So, One and Done?

Not even close. By the end, one of the pair declared, “I love this place, I’m definitely going to come back.” There was even unfinished business: since they skipped the meatloaf, they said they need to go back and try it.

Tips for Your Own Cracker Barrel Visit

If this story has you craving a plate of dumplings, or if you are bringing visitors from out of town, here are a few ideas taken from their trip.

  • Go after 11 in the morning if you want the choice of breakfast and lunch items at the same meal, as these two did.
  • Share. The cinnamon roll skillet is described as sharable, and sharing leaves room to try more dishes.
  • Ask your server for a recommendation. A simple tip about the beignets turned into the highlight of this pair’s meal.
  • Leave time for the store. It has candles, pancake mix, syrups and seasonal decor, and there was a deal on mixes and syrups on the day they visited.
  • If you are flying, remember your luggage weight limit before you load up on souvenirs.

There is something charming about seeing a familiar American spot through fresh eyes. Cracker Barrel can feel ordinary if you have been going for years. But two Brits with tears in their eyes over a plate of beignets are a good reminder that a warm meal, a rocking chair and a friendly server are worth appreciating wherever you are.
