Crispy fried fish sandwich with coleslaw, fries and a margarita on a plate

Lent may be months away, but seafood season never really ends at the drive-thru. A new roundup of the worst fast food seafood items of 2026 shows that a few big chains are stirring up real complaints.

The list covers Burger King, Long John Silver’s, Captain D’s, White Castle and Wienerschnitzel. Each one comes with a story about what went wrong in the fryer.

The ranking is based on customer feedback, taste tests and reviews from the past year, and it was published October 25 by Tasting Table.

Burger King’s Big Fish Drew Complaints About Fryer Oil

The Big Fish is an Alaskan pollock patty with panko breading, tartar sauce, lettuce and pickles on a potato bun. Online reviewers say the flavor has declined, and some say it tastes like old fryer oil.

A TikTok reviewer noted a fishy taste and overly sour tartar sauce. An Instagram reviewer gave it 3 out of 10.

Milder reviews praised the bun and toppings but called the fish chewy, bland or merely edible.

Captain D’s Fish Sparked A Swai Accusation

The Captain D’s story is the biggest drama on the list. In March, the chain said it changed its battered fish without naming the new type.

Angry customers alleged it switched to swai, which the article describes as a controversial, cheap fish farmed in unhygienic conditions.

A Reddit commenter said the fish is “the thickness of a marker.” Another viewer said it comes off as chicken nuggets and is not flaky.

Then in June, Captain D’s announced it will use Alaskan pollock going forward. Customers have yet to report whether the fish improved.

Long John Silver’s Shrimp And White Castle’s Slider

Long John Silver’s is called America’s most hated fast food restaurant by some on social media, though the article says its fish and chicken rank well with many customers. The hand-battered shrimp is another story.

Tasting Table found the eight-piece shrimp heavy with oily batter and undercooked inside, with a slimy feel. Facebook reviewers called it too salty with a rubbery texture.

White Castle’s Panko Breaded Fish Slider was ranked last in Tasting Table’s fast food fish sandwich ranking. The reasons were a mushy texture, a greasy, limp exterior and an unappetizing gray interior.

Still, some testers and fans like the slider, so opinions vary.

Wienerschnitzel’s Fish ‘n Chips Missed The Mark

Wienerschnitzel offers its fish and chips around Lent each year. Its Sea Dog, a fish filet with tartar sauce and cheese in a hot dog bun, is well-liked.

The fish and chips earned a harsher reception. A YouTube reviewer said the fish tasted like it came from a grocery store’s frozen aisle and had a very strong fish smell.

Other reviewers said it had no flavor beyond the tartar sauce and a disappointing coating.

How To Order Fast Food Seafood Without Regrets

Seafood is the one thing that suffers most from sitting under a heat lamp. A few simple habits can help.

  • Ask for it to be made fresh. A short wait is worth a crisp, hot fillet.
  • Check the bun and toppings, since a good sandwich can hide a weak fish.
  • Look at the first bite. If the fish smells off or tastes strongly of old oil, speak up right away.
  • Stick to items a chain is known for. A specialty fish sandwich is more likely to be a hit than a seasonal add-on.

When Quality Slips, Say So

If a favorite menu item changes, tell the manager or leave a polite review. Chains do respond to feedback, and Captain D’s announcement shows how pressure can lead to a change.

You can also check the ingredients on the chain’s website. Many list the type of fish used, which helps you decide before you order.

Seafood is one place where spending a few extra dollars at a dedicated seafood restaurant is worth it. If you want a fish sandwich, it is better to enjoy a good one than to settle for a poor one.

What To Know About Pollock And Swai

Alaskan pollock is a mild white fish used in many fast food sandwiches and fish sticks. It is known for a delicate flavor and a flaky texture when cooked properly.

Swai is a freshwater fish that is often sold at a low price. Because of that, customers watch closely when a chain changes its supply.

Labels matter here. If you are buying fish at a grocery store, the package should say what kind of fish it is and where it came from, which is a good habit to build.

A Better Way To Enjoy A Fish Fry

If these reviews put you off fast food, you can build a fish fry at home. Cod or pollock fillets, a seasoned flour coating and a hot skillet of oil are all you need.

Dry the fillets well, dust them in flour, dip them in a beer-style or buttermilk batter and fry until golden. Drain on paper towels and serve with lemon and tartar sauce.

Frozen fillets also work well. Thaw them in the refrigerator overnight and pat them dry for a crisper crust.

The cost is often lower than a combo meal, and you control the oil and the salt. Plus, a hot fish fry in your own kitchen is a Friday night treat worth repeating.
